Now that everything is back to normal, this has been one of the craziest and funniest dog births I've had.
Sprinkles wasn't due until Saturday and really didn't act like she was in labor. I put her potty around 8:30, checked her at 9:15 and was getting ready to go to bed around 9:45 when one of my other dogs barked. (They always bark when pups are born) I went and checked and here were 3 pups already!
ZJ looked at the pups, told her good job, then said "good night" and went straight to bed. That shocked me as normally he loves to stay up and do a puppy count.
She had 2 more within 30 minutes, then took a break for an hour and a half, then pushed out 4 more in 45 minutes. I was only expecting around 9 pups, so I was thinking how great this was.
Then I heard her yelp twice. This is a yelp that I heard many years ago and my immediate thought was, "Uh oh" and I checked her teats and sure enough, no milk. Good mommas will try and still nurse and it causes them pain.
So I called and woke up my vet. (I think he dreads calls from me, as he gets them often!) He asked if I had any puppy formula in the house so she could wait until morning to get a shot and I said that even though I did, I would much rather meet him for the shot asap.
I heard him sigh as he agreed to meet me in 40 minutes. (Takes me about that long to get there)
As I'm putting the puppies in a box to keep them warm while we are gone, Sprinkles is taking them back out of the box, almost as fast as I am putting them in. During this time, I'm also yelling at ZJ to wake up and get his shoes on, so he's stumbling through the house half asleep.
Then she up and dropped pup #10~! Total surprise to me. I gave the pup 5 minutes to make sure it was stimulated enough to leave it, then leashed momma to get her outside. She was fine with going out, until she realized I was walking her to the car.
She decided she wasn't leaving her puppies and started pulling me to go back in the house.
I'm in shorts and she just gave birth, so now I'm getting covered in afterbirth and while trying to force her into the car, I realize that Zombie ZJ is just standing in the driveway like he's sleep walking.
I get them both in the back seat and on the way there, I occasionally asked ZJ what she was doing and all I got from him was a few unintelligible mumbles.
I got there a few minutes before the vet and once he arrived and as we got into the building, the vet wanted to know about doing an x-ray. I said that I thought she was done, but since he had agreed to meet me in the middle of the night (it's now almost 2am) I would do x-rays. (Got to keep your vet happy!)
To my shock, he said there were 2 more pups inside.
Since her birthing wasn't the issue (the no milk was the problem) he said we would just give her the clean-out shot and see if we could address both issues at once. Then he hands me 2 syringes and tells me how and when to give them to her at home.
I said that I give normal dog shots all the time (which he knows) but didn't know how to give the intra-muscle ones. He showed me where to give the shot (later after I'm home for a half hour) as he had no intention of staying up all night birthing pups. LOL Spoil sport.
ZJ is still busy playing zombie as we get back in the car and you still can't get a human answer from him.
Now, I'm really tired and am worried about the no milk with the addition of 2 more pups needing born and not knowing for sure how to give these shots. So, I told ZJ it looked like it was going to be an all-nighter and that when we got home, he could have an orange pop if he wanted to stay up and keep me company.
I swear,
immediately that boy woke up, started talking in a normal wide-awake voice and giving me play by play of what the dog is doing in the back seat~!
I decided to see if I could call and wake up my son since my DIL is a nurse and gives shots. I also figured if I had already woke the vet, what's wrong with waking family members too?
To my surprise, I was able to rouse my DIL from her sleep and she said she would drive out and help me out. I was by their house, so I said I'd be there in a few minutes to drop off some gas money. Of course, when I knocked on their door at 2:45, their dogs went nuts and probably woke the neighbors since they live in a duplex. Ooops.
I no sooner left their house when I heard a puppy cry. I immediately pulled over, but couldn't find the pup, so back to their house I go, again making their dogs go crazy. We finally spotted it way up under the seat. Tiff gave me a box to put it in and of course, Sprinkles immediately took it back out of the box.
The rest of the ride home, ZJ is talking about his up and coming orange pop I had promised.
When we got home, Sprinkles raced to her 10 pups to check on them, while I'm using a flash light and going through the car with a fine tooth comb to make sure that pup #12 had not been born and rolled somewhere.
My DIL gave the first shot and showed me how to do it and we waited. I was suppose to give a second shot after one hour, so I'm pacing the floor waiting for the last pup to arrive and to see if her milk would come in.
In the meantime, I'm boiling water and sterilizing bottles, just in case.
Pup #12 delivered just fine and 45 minutes after giving the second shot, momma's milk started flowing freely!
Life is good, no, it's great! And ZJ is happily pacing through the house from chugging his orange pop (that does have caffeine in it) and now is all interested in the puppies and wanting to be Mr. Gabby.
As for me, both mommas are happy and content, and I'm shortly going to bed.
Here's the proud momma with all 12 healthy pups!
