Neighbor has a tree in his back yard. It usually has nothing fruiting after spring flowering. The last half dozen years it has had crab apples on it. The last 2 years it has also had regular apples on it. This year it has a bunch of regular apples along with crab apples together. Strange tree regardless. Loses its leaves in late August to early September every year too. I took a video of it but can't seem to get it uploaded. Guess I will need to snap a couple pictures of it instead.
My guess is they grafted crab apples on a regular apple tree.
