Just got home after cleaning and hanging it. Been a long morning!! Story is a pretty good one, albeit a short one:
Wife and I went out this morning for our first AM hunt this year. With school and just general life going on, our stand time has been very limited. So the wife got up in the buddy stand, and I went down and set up 70+ yards away from her in my climber. We had pretty good movement all morning, with small bucks and spikes acting like puberty ridden 12 year olds. I looked toward the neighboring property and noticed a really big bodied deer walking. I grunted a little and just sat back to wait, figuring it was the doe that had been running around earlier. A few minutes later, I noticed this bruiser walking through about 50 yds away, heading towards my wife. So I grabbed the grunt call and made a game plan. I was going to wait until he was right in front of my wife, and then grunt at him. I was hoping that he would then turn and head straight in on her. The wife noticed the deer, and stood up to get ready. As soon as she got up, the treestand made a slight creek, making the buck look around. After he surveyed the area, he turned and started heading towards me, walking to within 20 yds, and standing broadside on the tractor trail where I shot my buck 2 years ago. I was still hoping that he would walk down the trail to my wife, but decided I would shoot if he headed behind us. He took 3 steps walking to our backside, and I squeezed the release. Knowing he was not gonna go to my wife, I decided it was a great time to fill my tag!
The arrow hit a little low, but seemed to really put a hurt on the deer as it struggled to run off, almost nosediving several times through the grove behind us. He ran directly behind my wife, and continued until I couldnt hear him anymore. I glassed my arrow that was laying on the ground, and noticed there was no blood on the shaft, but appeared to be a bit shorter. I waited about 30 minutes, and then got down to give my wife a lesson on tracking. She tracked the deer all the way to the end. The arrow hit heart and lungs, and he bled very well thanks to the low shot. He zigzagged his way through the woods, going 80-100 yards before expiring. It was a great morning, and a great hunt! I feel bad that I couldnt get a shot for my wife, but am glad that I was able to fill my tag. He is a main frame 8 with a broken right brow, and a small kicker coming off the left base. He does appear to have a little age on him, and is a very big bodied deer. I will post some hero pics here soon.......I need a shower and some food though first!!
