Took my son out for the youth weekend. He’s been hunting pretty hard since season opened. A lot of close calls and missed opportunities but everything changed yesterday. Started Saturday morning hunting a big bottom in a double stand we’ve sat a few times. This is where the old 6pt has spent most of the rut. Had a shooter 9 come in at first light but circled around and caught our wind.
Moved to the other side of the farm Sunday morning and he was able to take a doe with an 80 yd shot, 40 yd recovery.

After going in for lunch and taking care of the doe, he decided he wanted to go back to the same spot. It’s a big hayfield that you can cover some ground on. Got in at 13:00 and it was pretty slow for the most part. Couple fawns picked their way around. Around 17:05 he said “Dad, big buck”. A buck that we have not seen since middle of October came out at the far end of the field. He covered about half of the distance in a few minutes. Once he got to 130 yds I asked if he was on him. He was a little quarter to and told him to put it on the front shoulder crease. He sent the shot and the deer mule kick, ran 100 yds and dropped. Another perfect shot and his first double in a day. 350L Hornady 165 gr

Now it’s Dad’s turn to get some late season seat time in the woods.
