I'm a little pissed. I really enjoy reading your shenanigans. Can you keep hunting and fill all your doe tags so we can keep reading your stuff? 🤣

Congrats on a really cool buck.

The Flatlands
Well, I’ll start my story by saying that I had only set foot on this property a couple other times over the years, and the most recent was 2 days ago. Like most public land in Ohio, a decent majority of this particular section is CRP. I decided 2 days ago to make the drive and sit on the ground. I had to wait till later in the afternoon for the wind direction to change, and surprisingly it did. My setup was simple: sit between bedding and food, sit still and shut up. That first night I saw 2 small bucks fuggin around in the CRP, a half rack spike and a solid 120s 8 point that I thought I was going to regret passing. The following day (yesterday) I slept in, and made the executive decision to make the drive again. I scouted another section of this public, and ended up walking a little over a mile through some thick bullshit, found a good spot but naturally there was a stand and camera there. I was snap chatting Nate and my buddy Eli and told them something was telling me to hunt where I did the day before, they both said go with your gut. So I hoofed it all the way back to my truck, completely sweating my balls off carrying my heavy stupid ass wet backpack with all my bullshit. Made it back to my truck and essentially emptied my entire pack because I knew climbing a tree wasn’t go to be an option. Threw a foam butt pad, camera tripod and my old raggedy ghillie top in my pack then drove down the road. My plan was to get down wind of a super thick, hopefully overlooked bedding area that had CRP bordering most of it. Made the walk in, and made my hide. I walked through the grass a couple times to have a kinda shitty shooting lane and called it good. Buttpad did nothing for me, and my knees simply can’t take a rawdogged ground sit like they used to 😂 I had 0 visibility while sitting on my knees, so every 30 minutes or so I would slowly stand up and do a perimeter check. I did some grunting and rattling around 5:40 with no obvious customers. At 6:30, I decided I should fugg with my camera, and some how a doe slipped in behind me, no shit, couldn’t have been more than 5 yards. The grass was fairly matted and the wind was blowing pretty good, so that’s my excuse. She busted me, but never blew or anything. She bounded to my west, I quickly stood up with my bow in hand hoping she’d stop close enough but she disappeared into the sea of CRP. Figured that was about right for how my season has gone and knelt back down. About 15 minutes go by, and I decide I should stand up again because I was getting fidgety. As I’m standing, I look to the corner where I anticipate a buck and thought “wouldn’t that be some shit if a buck walked out while I was standing like an idiot?” And sure as hell, here he comes. First saw him at 50 and he was walking straight for me. I slowly knelt back down and got the camera rolling. He stopped around 30 yards to make a scrape, quartered to me. He continued in to 20 yards and had his head down, that’s when I decided to raise my bow and draw. He must’ve caught the movement and looked directly at me. He then turned completely broadside to head into the taller/ thicker CRP and stopped. 20 yards and broadside, moment of truth. I never had a chance to range him but I figured he was 20. Put my pin where it needed to go and it did. I did not get a pass through, but it was nice to be able to stand up and watch him run through the CRP. He ran a nearly straight line for what seemed like 75 yards, I could barely see the tips of his tines then they disappeared. Naturally had to call my dad immediately, then my wife, then Nate. Nate told me to be patient and not even look for first blood. I listened to his advice, took my time packing up my shit and walked back to the truck. Nate was there in about an hour and we took up the track. The blood went from thigh high to head height on the grass, some spraying, some dropping. Blood was semi-sporadic and kinda tough to follow for a bit, and after 50 yards I just happened to look up and saw him laying there. We did all of our high fiving, pics and drank our celebratory beers. Deer got gutted and drug out and back to the barn. I’ll get him skinned and most of him deboned today hopefully. I’ll try to get a tape to him as well, I know he won’t score much but I don’t care. He’s got a ton of goofy shit on his left side and I love that. Long winded, but that’s the story. I will add, this is my first deer I’ve shot with a mechanical, been a committed fixed head guy for almost 2 decades. Entrance hole was massive, exit was the same. Strange thing is, he was perfect broadside, and somehow it exited very rear guts. I’m assuming some type of deflection off the ribs happened. We’ll see for sure when I get him cut up today.
