(159) My buddy, Lathe, came up to hunt with me today. He lives in Pike Co, and traveled up to hunt with me. I always think that sorta thing is funny as I imagine there were an awful lot of trucks heading to Pike Co from around here but not many heading here from Pike Co to look for deer! Lathe and I have been buddies since we were 4 or 5 years old. We've hunted together a lot over the years, but I always look forward to the next time!
He arrived at my house at 530. We stopped for snacks and drinks for the day and headed on out to the farm. He's never hunted the new property, so I drew him a map and told him where I thought he should set up. I went to my creek stand. About 740 I had a small buck come by me and head in Lathe's direction. I sent him a text and told him there was a young one on the way. We were about 500 yards apart. About 45 minutes later, I heard Lathe's gun. He texted me and said he had blown a tree to pieces.
Apparently, he was ready to quit for the year and took a shot at the little buck, but miseed!
We stayed in our spots until 1130 or so and I just couldn't take the boredom anymore. I decided we would do some easy "pushes", and we met up at the truck to plan them out. I did the pushing on the first two set ups. I stirred up a bunch of deer on the first one, but only one left the woodlot...it is really thick and they apparently didn't want to leave it. The one that went by Lathe was a nice one, but he didn't have a shot. The next two "drives" didn't produce any sightings.
It was Lathe's turn to try sneaking through and bumping deer to me. We went to the front woodlot. I dropped him off, drove around the other side, and slipped into a 20 ft 2 man stand so I could see if he moved any deer. I was only in the stand a few minutes when I saw a buck slipping through the brush. The sun was in my eyes, glaring off everything, but the deer looked like he was sporting a pretty decent rack. There was one opening at about 100 yards. I figured I'd better get on with it or get off the pot with this deer, so when he stepped into the opening, I touched off the 1100. Boom, he dropped. I still couldn't see his rack very well, but was hoping it was as good as the glaring sun made it appear. I felt a sick uneasiness... I don't burn my buck tag unless it's a deer that gets more pretty worked up, and I'd just pulled the trigger on one that I just wasn't certain on!
Lathe came on through, and I directed him to the deer. I asked if it was a good one and he said it was... "Not bad" UGH!
In truth, I just do this stuff for fun, and I had a blast today with a life-long friend so I won't cheapen the experience. But I will say that I immediately nick-named this deer "OOPS"
Interestingly, he seems to have been shot above the brisket with an arrow. Looks like a healed over broadhead hole to me, but I will know more when I get him skinned.
Mason has one available tag left in Zone C. I just told him today it is gonna be all him for the remaing season. He did mention that he didn't think I was a failure, but why did I shoot such a small buck.... hehe. Dang kids.
