Yea english are usually shorter and stockier, while American labs stand taller and leaner. Its all personally prefernce IMO, I was looking for a good mix honestly. This dogs mother was a english but she wasnt real short like most and the father was a mix between american and english. Im hoping to get a good mix between the two so hes not real lean but not short and stocky either. Hes def got a giant head, looks like a grizz bear cub but I think alot of that baby fat will thin out and he will turn into a perfect size lab. Im not on a boat much and mainly field/swamp hunt, so size wasnt the biggest concern but I still want him to be versatile. Def shouldnt have a problem handling geese :smiley_blink:

Trying to locate and find as many people as a can to hunt with next year just to put as many birds in front of him as possible bc I truely believe thats the only way a dog relates and learns properly.

Good lookin pooch Rutin! You're gonna have fun training him. Basic obedience is the biggest thing to tackle first. Everything else builds off of that.

That's a great lookin dog LD...

I had the same mix you did. Mother was clearly American, very small, almost not lab looking. Father was a mix, more towards the English, def tall and lean. I had hoped he would be a good mix, and he is. My dog looks exactly as I had hoped. This is him at about 12 weeks and 2 years.

You guys are killing me with these pics. I want a lab so bad, but it's tough when I work 12 hour shift work. Just doesn't seem fair to the dog.

I hear ya, lucky for me i have a devoted girl. I work 48 hr shifts and then get 72 hrs off so LOTS of time afield with breaks in between. Just gotta hope she doesnt currupt him treating him like a lap dog all the time lol

Impala - Great looking lab bud! My pups mother had the same build as your male but with a bigger head, His father way just like your male but a little thicker (prob due to age). Home for the same results with a block head. Either way im happy and ready for the journey.

Just got a text an hour ago from a old friend telling me he bought a lab as well, looked just like mines brother..... so much so that I asked where he got it and if it had a green collar. Sure as shit it was my second pick pup and Sarges brother. Looks like he'll be a local hunter as well lol

American a little shorter and stalkier then their English counterparts....

I actually went and read up on this a little, since most of my accurate knowledge was based on looks. The english carries a stocky head, shorter snout. Typically they say the "english" term is technically for those bred in england. But apparently the American is a taller, leaner dog. Where the English is a much stockier build, shorter legs. I thought my dog's father was an english, rather he was a mix as well. English head, american body. His mother the opposite, or who knows what. She was tiny, short build, very american head. I'm not sure what I'd classify mine as. He isn't very tall and seems to be stocky. He definitely does not have a blocky head though. They say the English are more for show and pets. Both are equally as friendly, but the American is more energetic and bred for hunting/sporting means. My dog is definitely American though. He's over 2 and still VERY much a puppy. Extremely energetic and as I said, hasn't matured yet.

Seems like they are a handfull until the 2 year mark or a little older unless you work them every day too burn off that excess energy.... Although when their young that's almost impossible..... But once they hit that maturity level and calm down they are a very well behaved dog.... Ours was the english version all the way and was one of the best dogs we've had after the first two years :smiley_clap:

Great looking dogs fellas. Mine is a 50/50 mix of American and English. He goes around 95 pounds right now and resembles an American lab on roids and stilts! He is one of the largest framed labs I have been around and could easily go well over 100 pounds if he was kept in good shape. Hell of a good dog as I'm sure all the ones posted here have been, are, and will be!!!

Proper training starts at a young age...

He's a little more laid back now...

Loves the water!!!

Hes a beuatiful lab Jesse! Im hoping Sarge is framed like yours but with a block head. His mother was not too short but def not american, the father was pretty much an american with an english head. That last pic is awesome by the way.

Jesse, remis eyes seem to get lighter and lighter every pic I see of him. He has some serious looking eyes.

Leos mother was an english yellow and his father was a american choco.

Through the summer hes about 80 lbs. Once fall hits and we are hunting hes in the low 70s,

My biggest fear in getting a new dog is that my next one wont be as aggressive as Leo is. I have hunted over a lot of dogs and I have never seen a dog get in water when temps are below zero like him. His drive is something I wish I could paste onto my next dog...But hopefully the next one isnt as bull headed. Its amazing to me the personalities dogs have, jsut like humans
