Looking for a waterfowl mentor

My only problem taking people is that I have been screwed and stabed in the back more than once doing this. I hate showing places to hunt only to come back the next hunt to find this person that wanted to "try" duck or goose hunting bringing every person he knows that hunts to his new property.

I will never understand where this "sense of entitlement" comes from...I mean, I would be glad as hell to see that they enjoyed their first "try" and want to get more involved in duck hunting...but taking over a spot like that...uncalled for.

Sad thing is that it has happened more than 4 times to me from 4 different people. Funny thing is they call me every fall.

Still, good to see that you have gotten those 4 individuals to enjoy waterfowl hunting and that they continue to do it...maybe you could suggest a place for them to ask for permission...like the other side of the county!!

I know exactly what you're saying and I had an instance like that back in PA. Had a woodcock haven that I hunted for a couple years and one year I took a coworker out with me and wouldn't ya know it the next weekend there were 3 trucks there and it was friends of his, not him, his friends. Now I run by the motto take me to a spot and i'll never go back(not that i've broken this) but take you to a spot and I expect the same. And if I take someone out I'm very clear on this with them, don't care how long you've been my friend if you return uninvited, you won't ever be hunting with me again. Unless I go snipe hunting then I'll definitely invite ya.

Hey Jesse......Can I go hunting with you? I need some new spots......LOL!!! I have had only one person do that to me and my blind buddy. Took a guy out to a private lake, and showed him a really good spot of ours. Next thing we know, the lake is leased, and we lose our spot! It really chaps your arse when that happens!

Good points & glad to hear everybody feels the same way. I've been really fortunate to hunt with several good friends over the years (thanks JohnR, countyhunter, Beentown), both as a guest & a host, and we all have the same position on spots. Even public land spots. Legally, public land is public land, and anybody can hunt anywhere they want anytime they want. But there is an unwritten man law that says if somebody takes you in someplace, you don't turn around and show up there without them on your own. It's just something you don't do without first talking it over.

The way I look at it, I was a newbie once upon a time & had some guys invite me out to hunt ducks. Years later I've been continuing to return that favor when it's possible. At the same time I'm still hunting with one of the main guys that introduced me, and always look forward to it.

Im interested also. I'll prolly just self teach myself. Books and the web. I have a plastic 2 man boat with electric motor. I could rig up some PVC pipes for a frame and camo burlap to make a floating blind.

Couldn't agree more on taking spots. Many don't return favors anymore either. Kudos to all of you guys paying it forward. Just goes to show the type of people that frequent this board, well not all of them. :smiley_clap: I live in Worthington and travel the state literally everyday, all county roads. I have seen tons of geese and some healthy rafts of ducks on public land mid afternoon. The most heavily populated I've seen is Big Walnut Creek. Working the dogs yesterday I saw a dozen teal and plenty of mallards with a few woodies thrown in.
