If you want to debate economics boy, we'll go at it. Probably best if you started a new thread though. Maybe you can learn me something from those books you've been reading.

Sam, I'll give you some economics.

Of the top 20 farms receiving funds from the USDA from 1995-2009, I've been on 3 of them. And 13 of the top 100. For 2009? 5 out of the top 100.

So then I did a little more looking and a little more math - to bring it back to this thread - and looked up and added the amount paid, just by the USDA DIRECTLY to the farmers whose farm I hunt on ... and for the same time period, it's over 1,600,000.

And that's just from the USDA!

Geeze, I guess they don't get subsidy money directly to them after all. Maybe you should ask your neighbors in your zip code, because they got 242,862 from 95-09.

Ernie- I am going to guess you were on those farms installing some new silos or something? You know, reinvesting into the farm, therefore putting money in your pocket? Trickle down 101? lol

No, not really Phil. We do our business in good years after a strong crop harvest, not in bad years when they get subsidies. The only people with a tighter wad is the Amish...except the Amish don't drive 50k pickups and 250k combines.

Don't get me wrong, I love farmers. I wish to hell that I was a grain farmer. But I'm not going to give them an ounce of sympathy- they do just fine. They shouldn't get extra perks.

$242K spread out over 14 years amongst multiple farmers is NOT really alot of money if you think about it.
Big properties, big machinery, big investments also equal big expenses.

I wish I had something useful to contribute to this debate, but I don't.
Other than I like having plenty of deer to shoot at and I like my food prices to be low.
For those things to happen there needs to be smart people working on my behalf somewhere.
The picture is BIG, and I know that I only see a small part of it.

The bonus gun weekend total was up 6% statewide.

In the frozen arctic tundra of Brock "Nostradamus" Ratcliff, (aka Fayette County), the kill was off 79% from last year. There were more deer checked in from the woods behind my house over the weekend than all of Fayette County. And thats no extrapol...err bullshit. In Greene County, which borders Fayette from the west, the kill was up 89%. Maybe there's something to Kaisers "migration theory." Vinton County was off 3% or down 6 deer from last year.

District 4, which is home to the majority of Ohio's oak/hickory forrest was up 24%. Never saw that coming.

Some other counties of interest from this conversation; Paulding up 86% - Meigs up 35% - Washington up 36% - Athens up 26% - Ross up 25% - Morgan up 65% - Delaware down 3% - Morrow down 27% - Licking up 16%

Four years ago say I saw 15 deer in one sit and shot 1. But now i see 2 deer and shoot 1.. Is that the same thing Mike? I mean, 1 dead deer is 1 dead dead either way right? Is that that same thing? Answer me that....

So what you're saying is.. It doesn't matter if you sat in the McDonalds drive through for 5 minutes or 30 minutes, you still got a hamburger?? Everything must be right..

Brock, myself and four others walked probably close to 3,000 acres in Highland county last weekend.. For a solid day all we did was drives. Guess how many deer we kicked up.. 6 deer total.. 6 guys pushing, CRP, Woodlots, and thickets for a piddly 6 deer.

Sunday. 22 guys pushed over 2,000 acres in Vinton county. 7 deer were kicked up all day..

I'm sure there is something to Kaisers migration theory. Except it's hunters not deer that migrated to Green from Fayette to increase the harvest from 36 to 68. I mean after a gun season like that I would think i would be looking to hunt another county also.. Oh Crap I did.. Too bad it was highland county fayetts southern neighbor and they were down 24%

Go piss down someone else back and tell them it's rain..

For the record, Highland was off 22%. I know, I know...extrapolating.lol

Ease up Joe. I don't doubt or disagree with everything you say. I've been on the DNR for years to micro manage. I mean, how f'n hard can it be? Indiana doesn't seem to have a problem doing it.

That's what was told to me early yesterday over the phone by a wo buddy. I see its 334 this year and 430 last year in the published numbers. Which is 22% must have been a few more added since I talked with him. Or he didn't bother to actually do the math. Either way its still bs.

When I checked my highland doe and a buddy checked a BB. it was about 8 PM and they had checked 10 bucks, 5 BB, and 13 does all day Saturday.

Did you see in the Ohio outdoor news that for regular shotgun zone c was down 10% as a whole.

And I agree Ohio should be managed by county. Keep the. A b c limit system but bust up the zones.

As Mike pointed out, the bonus weekend harvest statewide was up 5.85% from last year. 48 of the 88 counties had an increase in number of deer taken during bonus weekend 2010 compared to 2009.

I decided to run a comparison of total gun harvest (gun week & bonus weekend) for 2010 to 2009. Statewide, the gun harvest for 2010 is down 6.71% from 2009 per the two press releases on the ODNR website. 51 of the 88 counties (58% of the counties) saw a decline in the number of deer harvested in 2010 compared to 2009.

Time to see what happens in the next 6 weeks. Perhaps the muzzy and archery numbers will pull the total harvest up to last years numbers. Maybe not...

Thanks for doing that.. I wondered how much the +5.85% for bonus gun would decrease the -8% deficit for regular shotgun.. All total, it's still down 6.71%.. Dang..

Question bud.. What was their average % of decline for the 51 of 88 counties? Thanks.

14.37% is the average percentage of decline for the 51. The actual percent for just those 51 counties though is a 12.61% decrease (87,683 deer in 2010 vs 100,332 in 2009). 12,649 less deer in killed in the 51 counties where the gun harvest is down.
