I have been enjoying this thread thoroughly. I love to eat squirrel meat, however I can't believe how little squirrel hunting I've done this season. I haven't had much free time it seems and when I did, the weather was horrible. This morning I had free time and the weather was not the best but I went out anyway. It was freezing rain and winds gusting in the mid 20mph range when I left the house. As expected there was very little squirrel activity. I ended up just taking a long walk, looking at tracks, watching birds and deer. I did come home with one fox squirrel. I also saw one very small grey, but no shot. Those were the only squirrels I saw. One more weekend left.
nice shot, Bluedog! I just love headshots. only way to shoot them if you value the meat, imo. of course, you can't always head shoot them, but I do it 90% of the time. I hate blowing the guts to mush or annihilating the front shoulders. is why I only use solid lead bullets of the subsonic variety. no high or hyper-velocity hollow points for me when I'm trying to put rats in the game bag.
went to southern ohio today. spent too much time driving and not enough time hunting to suit me, but we got two greys and two fox on three different properties. only ones we saw. Lefty found the few that were moving. good dog, Lefty. :smile:

I never ever saw a grey squirrel on m farm until about 5 years ago. My neighbor down the road actually told me he saw one at his place the year before I saw one on my farm. The first couple of years I wouldn't shoot them, there were so few. While the fox squirrel is still the predominate squirrel, I am seeing more and more greys every year. I started shooting them a couple years ago and shoot 2 or 3 every year. They sure skin WAY easier than those fox squirrels. LOL! Also I am starting to see the black color variant of the grey squirrel show up in Jefferson on a regular basis. There has been one feeding at the bird feeder behind the clinic this winter. So stay tuned, I'm sure those greys are heading your direction.

Awesome!!!! My buddy and i would go to southern ohio to hunt the greys!!!! Fourteen years in a row we would head down to carbon hill and have a squirrel camp in september. The locals thought we were crazy to drive that far just to hunt squirrels lol. They would say dont you guys deer hunt and we were like yeah we do but these greys are a lot of fun and taste great and skin easy compared to the squirrels where we come from. Hope we get back down to squirrel camp one of these years. It was a lot of fun!!!!
this weather is dreadful. my buddy and I braved the cold on Thursday for a short afternoon hunt, and I'm here to tell you, it was cold. wind brutal. still, I'd rather be outside risking frostbite than cooped up in the house. dog driving me crazy, anyway. he just functions better when he gets to hunt everyday, which I totally understand. we hunted Lefty and his mother Tricks and between the two of them they made 10 or 12 trees, all but two were dens. Lefty found the two live ones and we did shoot them out. still holding out hope that we can get out on Wed, Thurs, Fri, or at least Thurs and Fri. working on trips to Michigan and SC next month as their seasons run until the end of February. geezus, I'm even uglier when I'm hypothermic...

Andrew got a new 20 ga for his bday a couple of days ago and he has been looking to break it in. Today was a "snow day" and he wanted to go hunting. I thought he was crazy wanting to go out in this weather but if my kids want to go hunting, I'm taking them! It was cold but he broke it in!

Ended the season with one more for the freezer!!!! Now i need to get a pressure cooker so i can try that recipe!!!!
Good job on the squirrel! Seemed like a good day to be out (as I was looking longingly out the window of my office toward the woods.
)few things I dread more than the end of the seasons I enjoy. mine started off this summer with the best walleye fishing I've ever done, kept on with arrowing three nice deer before thanksgiving and a boatload of squirrels ever since. squirrel season ended today with two limits. spent the day hunting with my friend, bowbuilding mentor, and squirrel dog guru. fantastic end to my foraging until the ice melts. watching my dog progress into a formidable squirrel finder along the way is so much the better. you've seen more than enough of me for one year, so here is my buddy Dean Torges with Digger, Lefty and Tricks(hiding in dog box behind Lefty) and the ten squirrels we took this morning in tough conditions. we got two more on a very short hunt after lunch. been a helluva season. enjoyed sharing it with you all.
Jamie i have enjoyed reading all your posts since i have been here!!!!!! 2013 and the first part of 2014 have been awesome for me also!!! Awesome fall fishing!!!! Doves, squirrels, Then put my biggest buck i have ever got in the freezer then it was on to rabbits. Still have a whole month for those so thats good!!!! Before you know it morrels will be the next target!!!!

My kids tried to go out with a bang but we never got anymore. We hunted yesterday and again today. We only seen one yesterday and Andrew missed a rabbit this evening which led to us coming home to get our beagle and we enjoyed a nice rabbit chase as squirrel season came to an end. My daughter really wanted to get her 1st squirrel but she hit one last week and it crawled off. Andrew had his best season in the 3 short years that he has carried a gun by killing 8. We have had a very fun season and made a ton of memories. Can't wait until September 1st!
