Rock n roll is my "go to" feel good music. I pretty much like anything that was played on an old time jukebox in a bar. Some Bob Seger, aerosmith, AC/DC, Alice Cooper, CCR, Eagles, etc. I still love all the 90's alternative. Alice in Chains, STP, Silverchair, Toadies, Collective soul, Chili peppers, and anything with Chris Cornell. My favorite group is Foo Fighters. Todays stuff is too techno sounding for me. Other than Shinedown, I really don't pay attention to any group , just a few catchy songs here and there.

I enjoy Church. A fair amount of "today's country" is a bit of a gulitly pleasure. Most of today's music is crap, while the country may not be traditional it's better than most anything else on the radio today.

BTW...I'm not sure how many of todays country artists have been inducted into the grand ole opry, but Paisley has. Maybe not an "outlaw", but definatley not a poser. He was actually born and raised just down the river from where cotty and I are from. Got his big break performing at the Capital Music Hall in Wheeling, WV.

One guy I have always liked since High School is Darius Rucker. I'm not sure why. I know he's a crossover guy, but just always liked his music. I believe he was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry as well

Being in today's oprey doesn't mean he's legit to me. Sure. Paisley is "iconic" in today's crossover country. But the reality is it's just his unique paisley sound. A sound made a ’68 Tele, an Aqua Puss delay, and a ’62 Vox Top Boost AC 30 amp. Take that away and there's no way his songs could stand on their own. On the other hand you could take the electric slide guitar away from Jamey Johnson, hand him a six sting and he'd still pull your heart out with a piece that talks to your soul.

Just listen to The Dollar and the heart strings get pulled.

I'm sure the Opry will be devestated to hear that.:smiley_bestfriends:

Can't dispute the point though. Most today don't deserve to even wax the floor of those who stood there before them. The only thing paisley had is an old guitar and a funky amp. Take that away and he has no soul.

I agree. Many many songs he does that with. The ability to convey emotion in a song is an art. Enen when he does an old church hymn "lead me home"

He manages to take a song that starts out somber and remorseful for the loss of loved ones. Then by the end with the same chorus line he makes it a song of celebration and hope. It goes from sorrow to celebration. The song didn't do that, words didn't do that. An Artist did that. Close your eyes and listen.

I think he has a little soul, just not what they had back in the day. Listen to him sing You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive. He may not have wrote it, but I think he does that song justice. Besides, even with his funky equipment, the dude still knows how to get down. That takes a little something. He's no favorite of mine, but he's a world from some of this new shit.

I was just posting that exact song. lol Listen to them side by side. Does he do it justice as far as keeping it close to original. Sure. But he's no Darrell Scott and it shows. Darrell let the vocals and meaning of the song stand on it's own. Paisley over instrumentaled and produced it, in the process he lost the heart of it IMO.

You could hand Darrell a six string and a stool and he could still capture the emotion and heart of that song. Paisley's it too studio and loses the song IMO.

Patty Loveless understood that when she covered the song. Listen to her version. Woman sings it from the heart and lets the song stand for itself. Not let the band carry it.

Not going to get in a big argument. It's pointless to argue with you. I never claimed Paisley was God's gift to country music, just that he wasn't a poser. He's a local guy from a tinly little river town that made it. He definately has his own niche. People may not like "fun" songs like "the fishin' song" , "celebrity" or "alcohol", but that's primarily his thing. He has collaborated with the who's who of country music, including Dolly, Alabama, Allison Krauss to name a few. He also opened for George Jones back in the day. But hey, what do any of them know.....
