What AR-15 do you own

Did you get the 3-9 Crossfire II? Cabelas has the 3-9x50 or the 4-12x44 for $169.00. I'm thinking seriously about one of these two for mine.

I have 2 of the 3-9 crossfire II. Love them both. I have a rim fire edition 2-9? I think on my savage 17 love it. The only pair of binos I have seen that out did mine where Gordos and I can't remember what brand they were. All I knew was they were around 600$ and my 200$ vortex's were right with em. Buy your vortex optics now before they realize what they are making and up the prices on you. I think dad has the vortex 4-12 can't remember exactly.

I stretched the legs of my AR this past weekend. Was ringing a 16" steel gong at 375 yards standing offhand within 5 shots due to trying to read the wind. Went prone and had no problems hitting a 10 inch gong at 400 yards repeatedly. I don't have a scope or a red dot on it yet either, though it was getting kinda hard to see the target.

I am debating scopes for my precision upper/build. Going to be vortex just not sure of which one yet.

I'm not that good of a shot, I can hold my own but not in that league. A 10 inch gong at 400 is only just over 2 MOA and even mil surplus ammo is rated for 2-3 MOA.

If anyone is interested in learning how to shoot like that, I suggest and Appleseed.

I have zero experience with a red dot type scope, so that being in mind my question is, can you shoot longer distances with a scope of this type? I'm talking yardages like Hedge was speaking of earlier. Would the dot cover your target at those distances? Would you just elevate your dot over your target to compensate for bullet drop? Somebody enlighten me here.

Better for close work but you can get magnifiers. The Vortex comes with a 2x. I would get a rifle scope for any significant distance.

The magnifiers suck in most cases. About the perfect all around rifle scope is a 1-4 with illuminated reticle. Good for short and some distance. Remember magnification doesn't help make you more accurate. Just helps with detail on the target. Many shoot open sights and are very accurate at long distance.

A red dot allows for quicker target acquisition than open sights especially if you shoot with both eyes open. They offer no magnification but the dot appears in focus on the target like the reticle on a scope does. They are generally 1-4 moa in size which means they will cover up approx 1-4 inches of a target at 100 yards which will increase or decrease as you increase our decrease the distance.

Yes you just elevate the dot because you should be sighted in that the dot is the poa and poi.

However with .223 there isn't that much drop out to around 300 yards. Especially if you do the traditional battle field zero of 25 yards. Then you are zerod again at 300.

I have never used a magnifier so I dunno about them at all.

By using a scope you gain in some areas at the loss in others. It all depends on what you want from the gun.

Yep. Zero at 25 as Hedge said. Shooting for qualification there were no scopes on our M16s. The 300M target came up 3x out of 40 pop up targets. All open sights. I would hit it about 50% of the time. I was a decent shot, but far from a "great" shot. Usually hit 30-34/40 on qualifications. There were guys who hit 35-40 with consistency though. It can be done but as with anything, practice certainly helps. In my opinion, a decent shooter hitting 300M targets open sights 50% of the time tells me a scope isn't an absolute necessity. How often do you get shots that far? I am guessing not very often.

Used the red dot (M60) sight on the M4 last weekend... Tightened the groups right up vs open sights..... My glasses had me all screwed up... Took them off and no problems....

Thinking back, maybe it was 36 targets and we got 40 rounds? 28-32/36 is where I was generally. Been over 10yrs already. Crazy how memory fades. Still, the 300M target with open sights is obtainable to a person with a "decent" shot.

The M4 has a shorter barrel and accuracy is less then the M16 by about a 100 meters.... According too the instructors....

If anything a shorter barrel it's stiffer leading to better accuracy. However you also lose your length of sight plane which decreases accuracy. What you definitely lose is velocity which decreases the maximun frangible range. This is probably what they meant because of I recall it is about that much less in an m4 vs m16.
