I hit up New London Res for the first time this past Monday, along with my Dad, brother and cousin. We got set up and fishing by 7:00 a.m., over top of a couple of the reefs. I caught a nice channel cat on a wax worm not long after wetting a line, and my dad hauled in an 11" perch from the tip up. We missed a few more bites but all in all didn't have much luck with that spot. We then moved east to another complex of reefs and fished there until about 3:30 p.m. One more jumbo perch came up but that was it. We saw quite a few 4" dinks on the camera down there.

At 3:30 everybody but me decided to head back home. I, on the other hand, was on a mission to catch some fish, and I had a feeling the afternoon bite was gonna be a good one. I made a long walk to another reef and was set up fishing by 4:00 p.m. Armed with a jigging rap and some minnows, I was settled in and waiting for sundown. Just as I thought, the walleyes moved in just as darkness fell. Nothing huge, but they appeared to be in the 13-16" range on the camera. I was able to get some to bite, and I actually hooked up with 4 or 5 of them... but unfortunately I couldn't get any to the hole. I think the light action rod that I was using wasn't quite enough to get a solid hookset.

In the end I had a 0.5 mile walk back to the boat ramp and had zero fish in my bucket to show for it. But for a first ever trip I was pretty happy with how the day worked out. I gained some good insight on that reservoir and am definitely planning on going back very soon. If anyone would like some more information, feel free to send me a PM.

Nothing like everyone bailing and you at least hooking some fish!! To me there is nothing more satisfying than walking/riding off the ice alone after dark.

I had the same problem many years ago with walleye through ice on Erie. My gear just didn't have enough back bone for them bony mouths. I had plenty hooked but lost every one of them before I could get them to the hole.

Looking forward to future updates on this lake.

I think I'm gonna head to Fin Feather & Fur this afternoon to check out the rods and maybe pick up some more jiggin Raps. I'm heading back to New London Res this Friday after work for another try at those 'eyes. Expect a full report!
