The patch of ground our garden is on used to belong to one of our neighbors. He planted spruce and white pined here to block the wind. A few years back, several trees came down in the derecho. My dad and I started cleaning them up and eventually dad offered to buy this little area. Our neighbor agreed and we took to cutting all the trees down and dad hired one of my neighbors to dig up all the stumps.
Tonight we came in and hit this with the tiller and spread some compost. Dad fed cattle in this area for a year or so, so the dirt looks amazing. It needs to dry out a little more, then we'll till it with the 23HP tractor and plant it. I must have hauled off a half ton of roots and rocks!
The cool thing about this spot is our neighbor who sold dad this ground was a ball turret gunner in WWII. He was a good old dude and loved to garden. What was once a pine thicket will now provide our family with lots of great food. He passed away last year, so this garden will be in his honor.
We brought in reinforcements.

Finished my raised bed garden on wheels on Saturday. Got the kids some starter pots to mess with. Also planted some strawberries, peppermint, blueberries and raspberries in the common area behind my house along with some sunflowers and corn. It's brushy and bidders a creek do if they grow then great.

I've been in full Walleye mode and neglected my gardening duties. Tomorrow afternoon I need to spray as I plan on enlarging my garden. My buddy is buying the house behind me and he wants to do a garden with me and get into canning, so instead of my 25x15 Im shooting for 40x25 ish. On this im sticking to Sweet corn, lots of maters, peppers and onions. I think a patch of lettuce is in store this year. I've never grown green beans, but my buddy is all about growing them for canning, so I just think more space is needed. Plus I tend to give each plant a ton of room to grow. I hate shit getting clustered and weed choked. I have a separate 10x15 for squash and pickles. The neighbors boss has a trailer full of cow shit for us that we need to get by the coming weekend so my plans have to get sped up a bit

If pine trees were there my guess is that soil has high acid content,,,,better lay down lime on the heavy side before your final till.

Yes, if only my food plot weed prevention skills could fall into my garden I'd then be a happy gardener. I'm toying with the idea of laying down fabric then mulch this year but that's a lot of work doing it solo.

I knocked off quite a few items on the "to do" list this weekend. 8gallons of weed killer sprayed, turned over the ground in the raised bed and prepped an area to plant sunflowers with the boys in a month. We are decently secluded, but there is a house 2 doors down that sits back farther than us. I HATE having the back yard visible, time for some "natural" blockage and the sunflowers will add some color to that side of the yard that is nothing but green. Pictures another day.

Here's a picture of my blocker. My buddy gave me 13 Blue Spruce yesterday so I've been busy moving trees around.
Mainly for seclusion purposes as well as wind block. The fence poles on the right hand side are supporting a row of baby Persimmons.
Note, hillbilly, WV, hoarder neighbor who placed his modular there a year before I built.
I'm adding the finishing touches to my lot meanwhile he's distracted by bringing home more junk everyday over buying some grass seed. Thus my need for more tree rows.
I've been thinking about rototilling a single swath along the ditch and planting sunflowers as well.

Great stuff fellas!
I had my garden covered in organic compost matter all winter and my buddy Chip brought over his putt putt and rolled it over on Sunday. Next dry period it's getting disced and I will dress it up with my tiller. Can't wait to gather my goodies at the farm market nursery.

My wife is into the garden thing pretty good. She does it all organic and heirloom only. 4 raised beds for the main part, 4x12, and the big growing vines go in another area. Every spring one area of our house gets taken over.
Joe, we just use horse shit from the neighbor. I get a good fire going and throw some on for a while. Then I pull it out and put it on top of the soil for winter. Turn it come spring an plant.

We do the raised/mounds with the black plastic for the vine fruits. They seem to really do well.

Thanks, like I said though, it's mostly the wife. A single bar of Irish spring keeps the critters away all season too. She quarters it up and places a piece on each corner. Works in the strawberry patch and everywhere else she puts things that normally get eaten.
