I'm a little late to the party. When my Polaris brakes "hang up" I simply put the bike in reverse and jam on the brakes. That typically frees up my stuck caliper.
Its never been more than that.

Had the same issue with the magnum I used too have....

Nothing a 4" cut-off wheel can't take care of Dan.

If wanting to go the nondestructive route, how about locking pliers on the outside of the head.

Or, find a 12pt socket slightly smaller than the head OD and pound that bad boy on. You'll cut lands into the screw head.

Thought about that - I loves me some ViseGrips

Ha! The visegrips did the job - was able to get a grip on the three offending screws and get them turning, enough that the phillips screwdriver could get 'em out. Whew! No extracting needed - good thing too, because I wouldn't have been able to use a drill because of the placement.

So, here's the muddy mess I found inside:
file is too big so you'll have to click the link

Now my problem will be how to get this off:

I tried putting channel locks around what looks like the bearing on the outside of the spindle, and the outside ring came off

I can't get anything to budge now. So I doused everything with WD40 and I'm going to do some research.

Fucking pain in my balls.

AND: FUCK PHOTOBUCKET! WTF?!? Why can't I post any of my pictures?
fucking technology changing on me all the time
Cocksuckers

PITA mechanical problems tend to cause me to swear. More than usual.
Fucking shit

You make me smile reading your posts Dan.

Trying to picture the inside of mine last time I had it apart. I don't remember needing to remove a bearing but I could be wrong. Different brand quad, but most are pretty similar. Channel locks on the bearing? Um, might want to replace the bearing if you marred the outside of it any. Does the bearing have a snap ring hiding you might need to remove first?

If the brakes are free from the drum, you should be able to use a pry bar on the drum to work it off. Every one I worked on had a splined shaft that the drum slid onto.

well alright, I'm sold on picking up some PB blaster. Noted.

Yeah flutie, I'm thinking that if I can somehow get those brake shoes to retract it should slide right off. I have no idea why they have those threads in there. Fucking shit. gonna poke some screwdrivers thru those holes and start prying tonite.

The threads you see are for the retaining nuts for the giant washers you took off at the beginning. They press against the seal for the drum casing.

If you havent, take the wing nuts off the cables. If you you look down at the cam the arm is attached to, on the brake housing should be an indicator and an arrow. Lining the two up will put the cam for the brakes in a neutral position, which should allow you the clearance to slide the drum off.

To get the drum off, it should just pull off with little friction. If it's being difficult, or the brakes are catching, use a pry bar between the housing (where you were having trouble with the screws) and the drum, working in a circular motion.

You got this Danno!

Push comes to shove rent (or buy) a puller set.... They come in very handy with this type of work.... I was fortunate to have access (before I retired) too just about every conceivable puller made.....

Well I mighta really screwed myself tonite - trying to pry I ended up breaking part of the hub base plate.

Flutie, your post made so much sense I was really excited to work on it tonite and try moving that actuator to release that drum....I tried every position, nothing happening.

So who thinks I'm toast? I'm thinking about throwing in the towel, winching that bitch up onto my trailer and dropping it at the dealer.
but I just think if I can get that drum off then I can fix this thing.

What a pain in my everlasting motherfucking overworked balls.
I should be focusing on deer

I was bummed. That piece that broke off is part of like a raised rim, and on the outside is an O-ring/gasket. Obviously important for sealing the inside when the cover is put on. Was thinking I was fucked. Completely bummed. Then later I thought, "If that plate were steel, I'd just lay a weld in there, build it up, then grind it back smooth." But I think that plate is aluminum, at least that's what it seems like, or some kind of cheapass potmetal (I'm a plastics guy, not a metal guy, so I don't fucking know). But then the light when on like Motel 6 - some kind of JB Weld Epoxy shit will build it back up. So now I'm calm. Back in the game.

But I've banged and pried the hell outta this thing to no avail. My next step is to go to Harbor Freight and buy me a puller of some sort.
If worse comes to worse, I can ask one of my neighbors for help - the guy is really the shit, knows his mechanic stuff inside out, has every tool imaginable, retired from GM, and I'm sure he'd help me. But I ain't gonna bother a brother deer hunter during the start of the rut. Plus, right or wrong, I don't feel like you should bother other people for help unless you've exhausted every possible avenue at your disposal to accomplish something by yourself first.

At Mingo I was part of the Epic Ride. Now I'm embroiled in my own Epic Repair. The Mingo mud is there to prove it.

I think I'm gonna walk away from this for a day or two. But that fucking drum, Kawasaki part# 41038, WILL be coming off. If I have to cut it off, or use my daddy's 9 Pound sledge hammer, in pieces or whole, I will have my way with it.

I'd put more pictures up, but they all gotta be compressed. Just one more pain in the ass.

Edit: On second thought, I'd prefer to get it off whole- just checked and 41038-1308 is $243.27
