Hard to tell from a pic, but it looks like a pretty solid stand of clover if you haven't touched it. Maybe a mow is all she needs. Some spray to kill the grasses, a mow, and some nicely timed rains might make that thing a gold mine.

I'd also leave the clover if it looks decent, or at least some of it. Seems a little clover goes a long ways with respect to browsing pressure.
The little bit of N it provides will help give your next years corn a kick too.

Agreed. I'm going back down tonight. Hopefully on the tractor!

I wouldn't spray that until you get a solid rain under your belt and a few day after that spray for grasses and it should be fine. Don't be afraid to also fertilize it with a low to zero N fertilizer. Bet they have some in Beverly

This^. Do you guys have any rural king stores down there? They sell a clethodim herbicide that's pretty cheap. Nukes the grasses pretty well.

We do. That was my follow up. Good looking out.

man you sure you don't wanna till the clover under and put in some grains/brassicas? I know your deer haven't touched them in the past but gosh that is what I would be planting!

oats/rye/wheat will get crushed anytime as well!

I wouldn't plant corn. When the deer start hitting it, It wont last long at all if you have a fair amount of deer around. We planted 3 acres last year and once they started on it we may have got a month tops before it was completely gone. It cost a lot to plant, fertilize.
It looks like you may be hunting over your plots, You may also have a hard time shooting into the corn vs. something that grows shorter.
I'd try some buck forage oats or some brassicas. Cheaper, easier, And will last longer.

Our neighbor planted both the brassicas and the oats last year with great success. We will be planting both this year also

Not to hijack thread Jesse!

I am surprised to hear this about corn. With good cob production 3 acres should have lasted a decent time just due to the fact how a deer has to work to get it off the cobb. This is assuming you have other food sources around as well. I am thinking the coons could wipe it out quickly tho as well. Hmm Just know a lot of guys who plant corn and never heard of this, as I do with "deer ate all my beans".

Thanks for sharing!

I was very supprised myself. We had 2.5 acres of beans next to the corn to. We have been managing for coons, I don't believe they ate much at all. It was not rare to have 15 deer in the corn at one time last year. It took longer then I thought for the deer to hit the corn but when they did it was over fast. We do have a lot of does around. Hard to keep there numbers in check with only two tags.

I never made it down to mow. I'm working on getting my own tractor so I can keep up on things without getting dad involved. He's just too busy to take time to help me with hobbies. That said, this thing is getting pounded by the deer.

sure does look good. what type of tractor you looking for? I got a small 23hp kubota for around the house with belly mower, man do I love it! I am shocked by how much I can do with that tractor. I love big tractor too, but this one works pretty darn good.

One I can get for free. LOL

I'm working on my dad pretty hard to hand me down the 1956 Ford 600 with brushhog and disc. He has 2 Kubotas (25 and 55 hp) and the Ford has become a barn queen. Time for it to go back in to production!

I need to get some help with a carb adjustment, then she should be ready to roll. The deal is I get it mechanically sound on my dime and it's mine. I'll be able to get super serious with my plots now. The disc is a family implement and I'd be the only one with a need right now, so it's mine until someone needs it for a project. I'll have a 60" hog to keep trails open and mow plots. It benefits him as well cause I can keep up on the farm while he builds his garage at his river place. Win-win deal for both!

Getting the clover mowed probably ain't happening. My dad fell off the roof of the garage he is building last Sunday and is in rough shape. I also have not had time to work on the tractor, so there's that too. But the deer seem to be hitting it hard and really, are doing the mowing for me. Very little broadleaf issue and over all, the grasses have stayed out. I'll hunt this area either way and come spring, I'll evaluate what's going to happen down there. With any luck, it'll be corn.

I did get the food plot at K's spot sprayed 2 weeks ago, as well as the Runway Plot. If I can line up some help for this coming Sunday, I'll get them both planted. So fingers crossed for an update!
