Staying out of a stand

What keeps you guys out of an area? What are some tactics you use to stay out when you really want to hunt it?

Been talking with a couple of different people and it seems to be a common issue, staying out of a place. You know it's for the better, but that is way easier said then done.

For me, it's rather simple because I'm working a lot and the little time I do get off, I enjoy with my family. And haven't had a good morning hunt in so many years...so I just don't do it unless it's the rut or gun season.

I normally stay out due to winds that are not in my favor. And most times I hunt only on the week days early in the season. I have neighbors on either side of my little hunting area. On the weekends they are usually running leaf blowers or chain saws or doing something that makes for not the best hunting. I've yet to be in the woods and have every day to hunt if I choose to do so. Lousy east winds are making my life miserable.

No joke. October is the best time to do outside work, so I will be very busy the next 3 weeks sprucing up around the homestead. That's more important to me than some shitty sits in the woods that only hurt my efforts come prime time.

Observation stands. If you don't have other projects to work on, sitting in a different, low-impact spot is often enough to satisfy the urge. And you usually gain some valuable intel that will help along the way.

I'm in this weekend, but I have family weddings the next two weeks. Looks like the next chance is the 29th. My 24th anniversary is the 17th of October. I do plan on taking a couple days from work when there is a cold front passage anytime during October.

Yup. This is my sentiment as well. Unless you have a good early season food source that's drawing the deer in, you're wasting your time and educating deer.

I'm just wondering how others deal with it. Like I said, I don't have time to hunt anyways. But I've had multiple conversations about this this week. So it got my mind rolling.

It is hard to stay out of stands you really want to hunt when you have taken vacation time and you are limited on days. Many times in years past coming down to hunt I've sat dreaming about a particular stand and sure enough the wind is wrong all that week. It's easy to let your mind take over and try to justify hunting it.

I'm not that disciplined. I try to bounce around to different spots if I really have the urge. A couple of them are far enough away I don't really over hunt them because it's just not convenient. The spot behind my house gets hunted way too much but I still kill stuff back there.

I like hunting with guys that don't pay attention to the wind...it's easy to set up hunting them!

In the past I would hunt up close to the road or close to buildings. I figure the deer are used to intrusion around those areas. All the areas I hunt are pretty high foot traffic anyways. I've watched hikers come along and the deer will either just bed down or stand there watching them walk by. It's usually the yearlings that'll watch...

I've got a couple spots that I'll stay completely out of til rut but I've got a couple good spots that I don't really care much about. I'll be going to one of those spots tonight to try and shoot a doe.
