Well I had an encounter with a coyote that was quite interesting. It was around 8:35ish and the morning had been totally quiet. My decoys were about 20 yards out in front of me and I was sitting in a row of elm trees that split a field. I was facing a tree line hoping the birds would enter the field and feed to me. As I was scanning the field edge I caught movement as a coyote popped out of the tree line to my left at about 70 yards out. It started in my direction, spotted my decoys and then stopped in its tracks. It did some head bobbing and started to circle down wind. It appeared to be unsure of the decoys. I made a few yelps and the yote would take a few steps forward and then a few back. It finally bailed, but then reappeared less than 10 seconds later. Now it was in a more aggressive stance. It was still around 70 yards out and the thing starts to growl. And then yip..yip…hooowwwwlllll!!!!! yip…yip Hoooowwwlll! Next it appeared to be urinating and then would fling the dirt and weeds with its back legs. This went on for several minutes. I would say it howled at least 30 times. Finally it started toward my decoys. It closed to around 50 yards, but then cut into the tree line. I thought it would pop back out closer to the decoys or down wind, but it never showed back up.
