Coyote busted my set up.

Well I had an encounter with a coyote that was quite interesting. It was around 8:35ish and the morning had been totally quiet. My decoys were about 20 yards out in front of me and I was sitting in a row of elm trees that split a field. I was facing a tree line hoping the birds would enter the field and feed to me. As I was scanning the field edge I caught movement as a coyote popped out of the tree line to my left at about 70 yards out. It started in my direction, spotted my decoys and then stopped in its tracks. It did some head bobbing and started to circle down wind. It appeared to be unsure of the decoys. I made a few yelps and the yote would take a few steps forward and then a few back. It finally bailed, but then reappeared less than 10 seconds later. Now it was in a more aggressive stance. It was still around 70 yards out and the thing starts to growl. And then yip..yip…hooowwwwlllll!!!!! yip…yip Hoooowwwlll! Next it appeared to be urinating and then would fling the dirt and weeds with its back legs. This went on for several minutes. I would say it howled at least 30 times. Finally it started toward my decoys. It closed to around 50 yards, but then cut into the tree line. I thought it would pop back out closer to the decoys or down wind, but it never showed back up.

Anyone ever experience anything like this?

Schu you did the right thing not wounding that yote as that about max for dead-coyote hevi-shot T-shot and 6's might have wounded it but wouldn't have brought it down. I've seen that and it's usually a challenge to an intruder..especially if there was dirt kicking with rear legs. They also have very good eye sight. Did you enter from down wind to where the yote was and were you in full camo? My guess is he knew something was up and was more interested in challenging an intruder to his turf than the decoys. In any even sound really cool and right up there with watching one mouse in a field. Thanks for sharing!!

I did enter on the down wind side of the field and I was in camo, head to toe, including facemask, gloves and boots(rubber). I suppose he could have caught a little movement. i did shift slightly to try to be in a little better position to get the gun on him.
