I get it but 2018 is only one day different than 2017, two days different than 2016
I was excited those years TOO! Gets me all happy when it falls early, means my kids get a chance at seeing some action during youth season as well. That week makes all the difference in this household. And anything that makes a sportsman happy these days is a win in my book.
Youth gun season is literally during some of the best action in Ohio :horse::smiley_cooking:

Give the youth the best days. If we don't do something about the youth getting excitement and enjoyment out of the hunting season then this will be the end to a tradition. If a grown adult gets sick of looking at leaves and squirrels imagine kids trying to sit there day after day seeing nothing. Give them a few days of seeing nothing and fighting the weather and they WILL NOT go at all.
I'm with ya! I gladly forego one weekend a year to keep the kids interested. I'd hate to see them move it to the October lull like they've proposed a few times.
I remember several years ago they proposed that saying the milder weather would make it more appealing to the youth. Is that for real? Why in the word would they do that?!

I am going regret this and look like a complete ass hole but I can't help myself. I would say majority of the current too members grew up with very shaky deer hunting and no youth season correct ? it seems like we all turned out to love it, I think it probably made it even more rewarding when I missed my first 5 deer and then finally got one. I don't know if I am wired different or if its being a teacher and I'm around youth very single day that has made me this way, but constant gratification and catering to youth to make sure its non stop entertainment is that the answer? Studies have been done that kids typically pick up hobbies for like 4 to 5 years then they burn out move on to something else, if they stick with it longer than that, its considered a passion or a love. This research is basically universal among all sports, hobbies, etc. Personally I don't think youth season being in prime time November will make a difference if a kid stays with it as lifer or not. Okay ya'll can hang me from a tree now.
Definitely not going to hang you from a tree. Different perspectives are good as far as I am concerned.I am going regret this and look like a complete ass hole but I can't help myself. Myself and almost all the others I hunt with except for a couple, came to love deer hunting mainly because the odds of seeing deer were much better than today. Conversely, I know of several younger hunters that gave up because of not seeing shit including when they carried a gun during youth season.
IMO, the best way to get hunters "hooked" is if they at least see deer.
If i read correctly that on public land buck's can only be harvested after Dec 2nd will truly slow down the amount of non resident hunters coming to the state to hunt, may not be a bad thing to grow population on public land.
You're assuming this will result in an effect of people seeing more deer on public land. I.e the numbers will grow. If you have half the number of deer you once did it would stand to reason that you only need half a season to maintain that.
If i had 100 rabbits that produced 100 offspring per year, it would stand to reason that i could have 100 rabbit dinners a year and maintain my rabbit population. If i only eat 100 per year i will always have 100 rabbit dinners every year thereafter.
But lets say I eat an extra 10% each year. The first year i eat 110 rabbits. This only leaves me 90 to start next year and they produce 90. So i start the year with only 180. Say i maintain my extra 10% consumption and eat 99 rabbit dinners the next year.
It would only take 5 years for me to be down to only having 50 rabbits that produce another 50 per year. So 100 total. Half of what i started with just 5 years ago. In the beginning if i ate 100 per year i could have maintained 100 rabbit dinners per year forever. But now i can only have 50 rabbit dinners per year if i want to maintain my 50 rabbit population.
Just because they cut in half how many dinners can be had, doesn't mean the rabbit population is going to regrow. It just means there are less to be had, and thus less should be killed to maintain it.
