So help me out here. I'm seriously considering retiring in Ohio. I've seen several jobs on usajobs.gov in Dayton and even a few in Columbus that I might qualify for.
Now, I'm just about guaranteed a job making 80K to 110K a year in MD or VA. Why should I move back to Ohio and get a job starting out at 50K to 70K a year?
I've got a few pro's already.
1. Ohio doesn't tax military retirement.
2. If there ever was a time to buy a house w/land in Ohio now is it. I can get a bigger house with more land for much less in Ohio.
3. All of my family lives in Ohio.
4. Ohio has bigger deer.
Good luck with USAjobs.gov. From everyone i've talked to it is usually nothing more than a front and a giant waste of time. It's not as efficient as the public job engines where you submit a resume and apply then interview.. USA Jobs requires a resume, but you have to fill out an application for each job you apply for. You will spend 3 hours filling out their "application form" only to do it again for another job.. All that and you will never get a so much as an email saying it was received much less a call for an interview. Plus jobs are posted for like 1 -3 months.. And if you're lucky and it's a real position, (vs one created with a specific person in mind already) They don't even look at candidates until after the job closes, then they take another 1-2 months for calls, interviews.. You know how most Gov jobs are filled. 9 times out of 10 they already have a person for the position but law requires the position to be listed publicly for a period of time.
If you want a government job. USAJOBS is not the way to do it... Network, call, email. Talk with people and find a position that will hire you.. USAJOBS is a technicality that must be completed after you get the job, but before you can fill the position.
As far as Ohio.. Deer hunting is the only reason I still live in this shithole.
4th highest taxes in the nation. (all inclusive)
6th worst business environment and jobs reflect it.
Police state. I saw more cops between Cincinatti and Columbus than i did the entire time between the gulf coast and Cincy.
Housing market is crap. Even if it recovers it will fail again due to to many cookie cutter home builders.
We have 4 seasons, Winter, more winter, still winter, and road construction.
Absolute utter lack of sunshine for 80% of the year.
Anything service industry sucks. Waitresses, customer service, etc.
Assholes that don't let you merge on the highway because heaven forbid you get ahead of them.
Everyone is in a big ass giant hurry.
