When I did my driveway in 2012 the calculation was about $12 per foot although I went deeper and heavier as I had some low lying areas. Now I need 1,300 foot of #57 topper.

How deep did you end up going, Ben?

12"-16" with #1 for the base, followed by #3, then #304.....now #57.

Anyone here have experience with outdoor wood burners? We are trying to get info on whether or not it would be beneficial to heat both homes with one wood burner or would 2 be better. How far can you efficiently pump the water? Do you run the burner all year to heat water or do you switch over to gas/electric once the weather warms up? Is it really cost saving when you put $10k+ into a system? How long does an OWB last?

I want one. Biggest reason is to use the resources the property is giving me. I know a few people with them and they love them. Feed it morning and evening, call it good. I can’t answer any questions, but I know I want one.

I do too but the wife is bucking it. I work a lot of shift work and she doesn't want to have to go out in the middle of the night to feed it. Tried to explain to her that I would fill it before I leave and when I get home. She also feels the smoke will set off her migraines. Hard to argue that one.

So put in a tall stack. Even if it does run out, it isn’t a primary heat source. Most people still have gas or electric. Do you have a gas option? Gonna cost me about $10,000 to get gas back to my house and I hate propane tanks...

Not an option....so it's propane or all electric.

Propane is not cost effective IMO. Electric isn’t that bad and is easy for the lady’s. Come retirement time, feeding the wood burner will keep you busy enough all year around. I say do it and use these reasons.

My boss has one and he loves it. He throws wood in at night and its usually good until the following night. His home is roughly 3000-3500 sqft. He plans to run heat to the barn he's building as well. All off of the same burner.

I talked to a buddy that had one that he fed 2 homes with. He said the problem there is they will call for heat on different cycles and you go through a lot more wood. He suggested going with 2 smaller stoves.

Very possible, as he hasn't got the barn up yet. If I remember correctly, I think he's doing a heated floor.
