nobody thinks he was advocating gut shots. making a joke like that about it is crass and is in extremely poor taste in my estimation. nothing even remotely funny about it at all. seems to me we should be considerably more dignified about such things.

Bah. I see it differently. There is nothing dignified about ramming a razor-tipped arrow through an animal's vitals and then disemboweling them. We kill things dead for fun and food. We try to do it quickly so that the animal doesn't suffer but there is nothing dignified about the act of being a predator. If we were so concerned with dignity then we'd all wait for gun season and hammer one in the vitals at archery range with a 1oz slug so as to guarantee a quick and efficient kill. We kill these animals for sport, fun, and food. We even try to make it more sporty by using archery equipment, some even push the limits of skill and purposefully introduce difficulty to the process by using more limiting means like trad gear. By doing so we accept that undesirable outcomes are more likely to happen, sometimes they catch one in the guts, such is the reality of things that we accepted as a risk from the start. Especially when we say "hey, let's remove every single piece of equipment from the equation that might make this less likely to happen. . While nobody likes it when it happens, and we all feel a sense of dread for the animal and down on ourselves, that whole humble spirit of the arrow harvest stuff is a bunch of malarkey. We kill bags of meat, disembowel them, hang their heads on our wall to show our friends, and make hamburgers out of them to share with others.

Was thinking about archery hunting on my 3rd trip to the DontDoItCenter today. And how good we have it now, could you imagine persisting on archery hunting with traditional equipment that someone you know personally made it all from bow to arrowhead. I wonder how many deer and other critters natives stuck with archery equipment and just gave up and moved onto the next one. I'm sure they also had excellent trackers but you have to think of it like they did, risk vs reward. I dont see them spending an entire day trying to find one animal. They most likely said screw it and moved onto the next one and didnt beat themselves up on it like we do. Poor shots might of not even been followed up on. Better chance to just find another animal. Now I'm not saying we should all start doing this, just damn do we have it easy.

I don't know about that one. I have a local friend that is part of the Wapole Island first nations tribe and he always laughs at the way people hunt these days. Maybe it's bragging but we got to talking one day about finding hit animals and he basically said no way would they give up until that animal was dead and utilized. Said so many look for blood only and don't know how to read tracks, read the terrain and actually follow that animal in a way that always results in a follow up shot or dead animal. He always has a freezer full so I don't doubt he's good at what he does.

It clearly was an attempt to lighten the moment for Creamer in a situation most bowhunters and even gun hunters experience at some point in their hunting career. To think he is condoning gut shooting a bunch of deer is ridiculous.

My .02 cents on the discussion at hand... We all know the downsides of hunting when we lose an animal to a poor shot for what ever reason... We have all been down that road and know that feeling it leaves in your gut... I'm fortunate enough to say I've only lost one deer in many years of bow hunting... At the time I almost put the bow down for good... I didn't have the attitude: " what the hell, shit happens"... It shouldn't be compared to getting thrown off a horse and jumping right back in the saddle... To sum it up: Let's do our best to have this not happen... If it does, "Then let what happens in the woods, in the woods". Don't post the gory details on a public forum....

Oh Jamie, I'm not defending anything. The fact of the matter, and jest of the original statement is, if someone wants to strip a bow down to its primitive state and fling slow sticks at animals, they better be prepared to wound and lose deer, at least at first. It introduces a plethora of variables that can and do go wrong. While a lot depends on the individual persons integrity to only take shots they believe they can make the reality is that can only lessen the odds. Its similar to deciding to snare coyotes instead of use footholds. You better understand and accept that you're going to walk up on a snared deer or two each season. The original statement is similar to if I told that person I wanted to run a marathon and his reply was "sure, go rub your nipples raw and destroy your knees, its a blast." Its called being honestly facetious.

Besides. If the primary goal was to harvest wild animals in the most efficient and reverent way with archery gear, then the OBA would have acknowledged crossbows long before they eventually did.

At the end of the day if you ask a deer how it would like to die I'm sure it would reply with how about you just dont fkin shoot me? We are killing animals, death is death. If you want no suffering, break the damn law and get a .50 BMG and start exploding heads.
Jamie dont you use trad equipment yourself? Why would you handicap yourself and give yourself a disadvantage that would increase the chance of wounding an animal. I dont care how good you are at using it, traditional is a disadvantage which increases the likelihood of a poor shot.

I didn't intend for this to turn in to a trad bashing agenda. I personally think atlatls and lawn darts should be legal. Every weapon relies more heavily on the person using it that the weapon itself, but even then things happen. I'm reminded of a statement that basically said "Every boxer steps in the ring knowing hes going to win, if he didn't, he wouldn't fight.". Archery is the same way. I think everyone here 100% believes that they're going to win when they release an arrow. Unfortunately, that's not always the case, despite our best intentions.

Shoot what you shoot and be honest with your abilities has always been my opinion. Now let's get atlatls legalized because how much fun would that be!

I just love the fact that ppl share their downs, along with the ups. I'm a firm believer with everything, it's not a matter of if, but when.

Numbers, stats, probabilities exist for a reason. Throw in some bad juju, karma, Mr. Murphy.....fuck, I'm lucky I can even kill deer to eat.

I see it from all sides. We archery hunt cause its harder and more challenging. If we were soo woried for the deers sake it would be just gun hunting. Im sure im like the majority on here, and want to make the best shot possible and put the deer down as quick and easy as poss. When its down i give thanks to it and when it comes together like that. Thats perfect.. But as we all know it doesnt always happen like that..i feel even a shity shot that hits liver or worse. The gut. Still mite be better than being eatn alive by coyotes. Mother nature is pretty cruell to . And many deer are gut shot with gun as we know. It happens. And could happen again..The only thing that i would ever say something about or put some one down is who takes every shot at every deer and doesnt give a shit about wounding. Buti dont think any one on here is that type. The thing i see is a good group of passionate hunters who are honest and open about there hunts. Thats good shit. To have real discussions. .... It just shows what a genuine good hunting site. You wouldnt see this shit on ogf. The honesty of the site is a big part of why its the best outdoor site around. Headn out sun or mon for first hunt. Temps are looking great for rest of month. Good luck guys.
