They can be, you still gotta figure time involved can put you in the negative just like reloading ammo. Especially in the beginning and even first couple of the year. They are not an easy animal to skin, takes a while to learn a grove or tricks.

I’ll see if I can figure out the best way to do that. Without making a video that you could watch that’s already on yt. I’m far from a professional but, it comes down to being able to pick a location and a keen eye to making it look natural. Like my dirt holes are messy I don’t like a perfect textbook looking set. And finding a lure/bait selection that works for your area. I have some that get made just like the rest and they just don’t work here but other places guys slam them with it. No different than camo choices.

I only put out a half dozen sets yesterday as I’m not fully committed yet but had two catches. The not pictured was a successful ditch tiger release. I know most guys hate em. They don’t bother me other than the fact I had to remake the set for nothing. Plus you start making them disappear that doesn’t make for good relationships with Neighbors.
I remember spending a lot of time making a good set only to come back next morn with the area torn to shreds and a damm opossum in there grinning at u.. And Chass. Its way easier to take a fox out of a leg hold with a small hole in its head or a crushed skull than a live one. Depending on trap for fox i liked the 1.5 double coil and usualy breaks there foot or leg were trap hits. More than likely a death sentence. If you catch him, best bet is put him down and tan him or sell if theres a market. This thread makes me want to get back in. At least for rats and mink. Loved that shit. Need to look up fur prices and maybey break out my old trapping basket and hatchet .

I run offset 2 and 4 coil# 2s and never broke a foot or leg on a Fox. That tiger today was in a 4 coil and walked away just fine.

I had one exp. with trapping a fox and releasing it. Ive only got 3 fox, a red ang a grey in my last year of trapping as a kid in Ohio and of course didnt try to realease them cause they were target i had those sets made for. But while in Alaska had 3 red fox that were always at the lodge and pretty much pets. Had some marten sets that were pole sets and managed to get one of the fox in the set. It was a 1.5 long spring. I could say for sure the foot\ ankle was broke but wasnt easy releasing him from trap and for a month after he couldnt put any pressure on that leg and eventualy stopped comming around . mite not break their legs but one realease in my very limited realease exp. It didnt turn out good for fox
Released unharmed. I should have video of it from ground level. I'll pull my cam on Thursday.
My brother-in-law showed me the Charlie Robbins stepdown dirt hole set on Sunday. Caught a grinner in this set yesterday and the cat was there this morning. We put out 6 sets altogether, with a few variations of the same style of set. He used to trap a lot, so it's good to have him around to learn from.
