What did you do for the deer today?

I ran cams for a few years and one critter I never got a picture of was a skunk. Always found that odd. Like mini bigfoots
Persimmons and bur oaks. 150 starters, about halfway
There was also some red oaks in the mix. Everything I had room for is planted. Should make for some great deer food in a few years. I got the last 4 in the ground when I got home today. Can we jump 20 years ahead yet?!

Good luck on the persimmons. If it’s wild stock 90% will be males. The females will only produce and draw more carnitas than feed deer.
Groomed my minerals tonight and made a food plot gameplan. Dropping a few more trees this weekend, then spraying in prep for planting in a couple of weeks.

They will be females from a nursery. Most fruit trees are grafted so they will produce fruit.

Besides spraying my clover plot, I spruced up the mineral site. It was holding it's own even without any love yet this spring. Next time down, I'll add molasses and grape drank powder to the log and hang a cam. Tis the season.
Sprayed a three acre field yesterday. Used 3 quarts of 41% gly in a 31 gallon sprayer with surfactant and ammonium sulfate. I feel like i didnt use enough gly but we’ll see. I take it back, I probably needed to split it into two 31 gal batches. But i dial the pump down and covered the field many times over.

@Cogz you should be fine spraying at that rate. Some of the more resilient weeds may not be killed but I bet the majority will be. 1 qt per acre should be more than sufficient. A little heavier volume would have been nice but 10 gpa will get it done.
Nice thanks for the encouragement. It is actually under 3 acres the way i sprayed it, leaving some strips of cover. Depending on what the soil exposure looks like, i may try to broadcast some soybeans into it before mowing it. I do have a spike harrow that could rip it up a bit, and a single bottom plow. But thats a lot of ground to cover without a disc. If it fails i’ll just seed rye or clover into it around labor day.
I was a little behind schedule and probably light on my application yesterday too. Can't believe how tall the grasses and a few broadleafs were in the clover. If in 2 weeks it doesn't look any different, I'll brushhog, then get back on the weed control after it recovers. The clover looked great, but it was close to being choked out.

With me adding the small trees and such, I’m a little hesitant to do any spraying for fall plots. We will see how it ends up. The honey suckle destruction came to a halt last week with all the rain. Hopefully get back on that project soon.
That throw and grow I put out did wonders for the erosion problems I was having. So that will likely becomes a yearly thing for me to do in the one section of trail. Still can’t even draw a deer track, let alone find any. Oh well, taking the long term approach lately anyways. It’ll be a few years before I have fruits an the persimmon and likely 15-20 years before the acorns start producing. Sounds like a good time to dig a pond for a more reliable food source while we wait.

mowed existing and new access paths through a former hayfield and in a regenerating field adjacent to the field I sprayed Saturday. Aligned with a couple trees I plan to hang in on the fringes of the property. Allows me to get in and out without bumping too much and gives the deer some paths of least resistance. May or may not have been dictated by access to raspberries.
