This pretty girl turned 4 today. I got home tonight and look out the back door and she's the only dog I see. Once she saw me, she hunkered down and gave me that look that I now recognize as the face she makes when the other two are gone. So I walked to the halfway point between the house and the woods, then pointed and said "go find them". She immediately took off nose to the ground working a zigzag until she hit their trail, then sprinted for a bit until she caught their wind. She stopped, smelled, changed course slightly and disappeared down into the woods. 30 seconds later, here she comes with the other two at her heels. She's the worst retrieving lab in this history of labs and really isn't all that loveable, but she's a damn fine farm dog and she's smart as a whip. She's great with the kids, too. I still hate her name, but she's got a special place in my heart.

Then she is that loveable

Well Milo is about 14 weeks old and is now 37 lbs. ornery as can be but he is starting to get better. Pretty well housebroken unless he gets really excited. Some pics this week from camp. He really enjoyed seining minnows. Getting good at kayaking too.

I’ve been spending at least a half hour every day training the dumbass. He’s coming around pretty good. Starting to like him.

I was damn close a couple of weeks ago to getting another dog and starting over. Decided I needed to give him one last go before digging a hole. I’m glad I passed on the puppy and stuck with him. 👍🏼

I’m willing to bet the owner needs more training than the pup.

Hey @Isaacorps and @cspot, here's some interesting news for you! What's really crazy about this is just this morning I saw a dog on IG that's half golden retriever and half lab. Looks like Gunnar's twin. I showed Tracie and said I wouldn't be surprised to see this on his panel. Not 10 minutes later, his panel hit my email. I was right with almost all my guesses, which isn't that impressive given how much of a mutt he truly is. We are also very surprised, although, now that I see the Terrier group, I can point to 2 of the 22 puppies and show you those genes poking through.

Of his 8 great-grandparents, 3 are lab, 1 is a rottweiler (this is the combo we hoped for as I had a lab/rott mix growing up that was an amazing dog), 1 would be a golden retriever, 1 is an Australian shepherd (huge surprise), and 2 come from the "Other" category which includes Guard (this confirms our suspicion that pitbull was possible and Bernese Mountain Dog as well given his size), Herding (which confirms the German Shepherd and Great Pyrenees possibility given the recessive gene that showed up in 4 puppies with 5 toes on the back feet), and of all things Terriers (who fucking knows?!? Execept that one dog from each litter expressed what I thought was "small dog" genese and this would explain that).

So in short, he's a mutt. In my mind, I'll lean into what we hoped and what's most obvious and that's he's a lab with some rottweiler and golden retriever, and a whole bunch of other randomness!

I guess they weren't as much lab as you thought. So let's see if that is Gunnar's percentages what would our pups be. Hmm. LOL. I guess @Isaacorps and I don't need to do any test.

I actually am not surprised about Rottweiler as Milo's face you can see alot of that in him. My wife had said that a couple of weeks ago.

Agreed. And if I remember correctly, he has 5 toes, which is another expression of Rotts, among others.

I was shocked to see how little lab was in him given his mom is purebred. That means dad is a true mutt and maybe not the one we suspected.

Interesting! Jax’s strongest tendencies/traits are definitely lab. Every once in a while if I look at him just right I can see some terrier in his face (I thought pitbull). Pretty cool to know, thanks Jesse!

So, I’m new too this whole DNA thing. But, wouldn’t he be 50% lab if mom was a purebred? Or actually how much of a percentage would a pure bred be?

Well, it's definitely odd, but I'm not a geneticist. I'll say this, his mother came from a breeder that does silver labs. They advertise everything is AKC. But if mom typically carries the most weight genetically, he should have been much more lab than that in my layman's mind.
