I would never ever hunt someone else's stand on public. That stand just tells me keep going, maybe cut deer off well before they get to this guy or just find a completely better place. You don't know how often he hunts, how he hunts, deer that have been spooked there, stand full of jizz and sticky, etc.. Never understood why someone would hunt another person's stand as IF they found the holy Grail of all stand locations. If anything it marks off a spot I don't worry about hunting.
I’m with you brother, I feel the same way

In the long run we as outdoorsman are all in this together...What ever happened to respecting and helping each other instead of Fu#@ ing over each other... Maybe being nice to someone will create a new friendship for future hunts or whatever...Even if you never see the person again knowing you helped him should give yourself a nice warm feeling..

Short story, I've probably told it before, but I'll repeat it one more time..

A few years ago my brother and I were hunting opening day of Pa. rifle season. As we parked our vehicle, a van parked behind us. Out stepped a young man and we exchanged good mornings.. He asked where we were headed and asked if he could walk up the trail with us... Sure no problem. He broke off before us and we continued on... Around 9 am I shot a buck and began dragging him out... When I approached the area the young man departed us he saw me dragging the deer and came over to help... I told him get your butt back up there and get a deer, I have all day to get deer out plus it's all down hill... As I stood there with him I noticed his gun HAD NO SITES.. I said how the hell you gonna kill a deer when you can't aim the gun...His response was that he couldn't afford to fix gun as he was on hard times... Now just the night before I was looking for something and moved a brand new 4 power Redfield scope I bought and never used and probably never would have... So at that point I handed the guy a piece of paper and pen and asked for his address, I told him I was going to give him a scope... He also was in luck as I had mounts for his Remington 700... So I got home dropped deer off at the butcher and went home and wrapped up scope and mounts and put in the mail. Couple days later I get a call from the guy.... He was in total disbelief that I did what I said I was going to do.. He was happier than a pig in you know what...To this day I still get a warm fuzzy feeling over my actions... Oh last week I got my annual XMas card from him...

My view is different. I'd rather someone use my set up than bumble fuck the area looking to cut me off. Who cares if they kill a slob out of it? Means I won. I picked the right spot.

Would you guys let a buddy sit in your stand? I don't see the difference.

Difference to me is someone I know and trust vs. someone I don't have a clue to what their hunting habits are. This same thing sort of happened to me on the private farm we hunted up here years ago. I had a ladder stand set up in a corner of a cornfield set for Terry to try to get her first deer out of and it was a real good spot. Couldn't figure out why the deer stopped using the trails out there and after a couple weeks (only hunting weekends) I found out one of the other hunters that had permission had been hunting it all week long for weeks. Completely burned out the stand and for that matter the whole corner of the cornfield. He had free roam of a few hundred acres and he opted to be a lazy fuck and use my stand. Had I known I would have not wasted our time and moved. Same as public land, don't be lazy using someone else's stand.....that is just my opinion. Like I said, just because a stand is there why would anyone think that person is the deer whisperer and have the whole chunk of land figured out to where THAT is THE best spot?! Not me, move on and give space to those you don't know.

Hunting someone else’s stand without their permission is definitely not right. If you invite a friend to sit it, that’s ok...but for a stranger to just go sit it after all the work and scouting you’ve done just isn’t right. I’ve found cigarette butts, candy wrappers and empty water bottles at the base of some of my stands on public land. In my opinion, that guy just ruined that stand for the rest of the season. If I find someone’s stand, I won’t sit it and will move on to greener pastures. That’s why I do all of my scouting in February and March. No hunters in the woods, you can see deer trails, old rubs/scrapes much easier before the green up of spring, no bugs and cool temps. If I find any signs of another hunter in the area, I will move on. I want to find a spot that I’m confident in, and take it as a intrusion on my efforts if someone else stumbles across my setup and decides to hunt it. May as well just walk into my home and sit down at the dinner table uninvited....maybe even roll in the hay with my old’ lady while you’re at it....and drink up all of my beer! I have NEVER sat someone else’s stand..I would feel like I’m stealing all of the hard work that they took the time to put in. I have sat a friends stand a few times but only when I was asked to do so...and I have had people sit my stands. Last fall my buddies daughter killed a doe out of one of my stands...it was earn a buck (early season you have to kill a doe before you’re allowed to kill a buck) and she was having trouble killing a doe...2 hour sit and she killed her doe....and I got some real good homemade chocolate chip cookies a few days later!

110 % with ya on that George...I would never intrude on someone... NEVER... It's not only wrong to do, but let's say you are limited to days to hunt and you jump in Joe Blows stand at 6am all pumped up waiting for the sun to rise... Just as the sun is peeking over the horizon here comes Joe Blow... Now what are you gonna do asshole you just blew your day of hunting... Oh you also screwed the guy that put the stand up... I never would take advantage of someone, I just wasn't raised that way....

What if I use a self climber and been hunting an area for years and you hang a stand on the tree I use? If every single person hangs a stand on public land there wouldn’t be any where to hunt. Being a slob hunter who liters is a completely different conversation, I typically out walk the smokers;)

If I ever came across that situation...and I have, I simply move on. I had a stand that I’ve hunted since 1982 and in 2007 someone put a stand 20 yards from my stand...I pulled my stand and repositioned it 100 yards away in the swamp where the deer typically came from. I did this after dark and made sure I got in extra early. He never knew I was there until I drug my buck past him on the way out. My hunting time is too precious to be butting heads and wasting my time. Another time I went to my stand in the afternoon and there was someone sitting in it. It was over bait and I’d been baiting it since august and planned on only hunting it during our week long gun season...well the afternoon of the opener I had this leech in my stand. I told him to get out or I’ll get you out. He left but returned during the night and cut down the tree. This was on private land. Lucky for him, he never came back.

I guess if the tree is big enough there is always room for one or two more LOL!

Somehow we got sidetracked here... If he bought the permit he had every right to pitch his blind where he did... Maybe he put it up there in the past.. Gob bless him... But he had no right to F with my camera by shutting it off and erasing the card... THATS WHERE HE CROSSED THE LINE...

If you don't want someone in your stand on public land, don't leave it. You are trying to claim a part of public property.

Yes Rich, that dude is a dick for messing with your property. Maybe some day you two can chat and see what actually happened. Big deer make people do stupid shit.

Dave... I actually don't want to chat with him... If he hunted there before and shot Casper I would have congratulated him and help him drag it out... I don't own the deer... But don't F with my stuff...

I dont see how someone's personal treestand that was hung even on public ground would be alright for anyone else to hunt out of without permission from the guy who owns the stand and took the time and energy to scout and hang the stand. Theres plenty of trees in the woods. Go find your own tree to hang a stand from and bring your own gear while you're at it.

I don’t see how you leaving your stand on public justifies a random person stumbling along through there to sit it. You don’t hop into someone else’s car just because they parked in your spot at work....

Then don't leave it. Pretty simple. Use a mobile set up and hope no one else used a mobile set in "your" spot.

I don't hunt public or stands, maybe this is why I see it this way. Seems crazy to me that people feel entitled to a certain spot because of a stand. You think you are the only person able to scout or what?

Can you put a dock out on public waters and expect no one else to fish it?

I'm sure I'm stepping on some toes here, explain it to me. Because right now we are on opposite sides. I think the person leaving the stand on public land is at fault. (Tree hugger outlook or birdwatchers view.)

It’s public land, so everyone has a right to be there. However, if someone took the time to scout and set up, you should respect that they got there first and go find another spot. There are plenty of spots in the woods to hunt, so you don’t need to ruin another persons hunt because he got to “your” spot before you did. It’s sorta like going to your favorite restaurant and seeing someone in your favorite table and sitting at that table with them...like they weren’t there. I know some on here aren’t going to agree, but there’s hardly any topic where everyone agrees 100%. This is just the way I was brought up hunting. When scouting in the late winter/early spring, if I find someone’s setup on public land that they haven’t removed yet, it tells me that someone is already hunting that area and I’ll go to a different location to avoid the competition. I wouldn’t even entertain the idea of putting a stand up early before the next season to try and “get there first”. I avoid other hunters as much as the deer try to avoid them...and if I KNOW there is another hunter in the area, I’m leaving for a better, more remote area.

The state put an addendum too the rules allowing anyone too use a stand that’s put up on public (hunting) property. You know that going in to it. Don’t be surprised if it happens..... Personally I wouldn’t, but not going too fault those who do.....
