Yea I am of the same opinion as your guys, he is a nice guy, came over talked about the deer. He said he was tempted to shoot a buck if he saw another one, but didn’t want to incase he found this deer. That alone tells me he is a stand up guy, because a douche bag slob hunter would kill another buck if he could and then try to find this one later and use a carcass permit.

I try to build relationships with the people around here because I live out of state and I figure the better relationships I have with guys, the better they will look out for my property and me.

The only way I would keep the deer is if I saw him alive and shot and killed him.
If you don't find it, are you going to give him access to look for it?

Did you share the pics you had of him 2 weeks after the shot? I wouldn't be surprised if that deer is still alive. I'm sure he's shed already.

I would be more inclined that he moved off than died. 2 weeks is a long time and he was eating. As long as he stayed clear of coyotes, I think he made it.

The odd part of this is that (for me and what I remember) I didn't see a broadhead wound. If you do find it, I'd check that spine for lead.

There is a spot on the top of his back, but boy wouldn’t that be some shit if it was gunshot

I've butchered a lot of deer and found my share of lead in them. There was about a 10 year stretch that every deer I butchered from Athens had lead in the neck. Small rifle caliber.

With the lack of deer you have had...and how often that place is empty. I would be looking for more clues on all the deer you can. Not just this buck.

So the deer was still alive 2 weeks after he shot it? Doesn't sound like his shot was lethal. And I don't consider causing an infection due to a poor shot lethal. I'd therefore see no reason to let him tromp all over the farm 'looking' for it and scooping up any sheds in his search.
Now if it went MIA from all cameras the day of the shot I may have a different opinion.

I'd say you are planting seeds. Hopefully the seeds of a fruitful neighborly relationship and not the seeds of a noxious weed that you can't get rid of. Be clear this doesn't mean he can traipse all over your place whenever he wants.
