I had a tree that was covered with them a while ago…the following year there was nothing. Don’t know if it takes a couple of years for them to return or not but there was enough on that fallen tree to fill a few 5 gallon buckets. They did look dry or parched and it had been awhile since I had been back there so I don’t know how long they’ve been out.
can I do anything to make sure they come back next year and become more plentiful? Lol
Hard to tell...they look a bit past prime. Check that same tree next year. The group I had this year was a boomer last year. They’re good to eat?
At first I thought you were talking about Dave. Maybe his Strouds pet name?Entolomas ( shrimp of the woods), anyone ever try it.
Thanks for the heads up. I’m not much of a mushroom hunter but I did stumble onto some morels this year and this was my first noticeable encounter with the chicken of the woods. You guys impress me. You’ve really got to know what you’re doing when identifying edibles.I like shrimp of the woods, some guys call them eggs. They are an aborted mushroom that didn't grow. I picked my first hericium yesterday. Another that is easy to ID & tastes great. Going to some big woods today to look for hens. Been seeing lots of oysters to.
FNG throwing down some info like a boss...Alot of caution i think needs to b taken now. Shrooms have exploded everywhere with current rains. If ur eating any kind of white wild shroom know 100 percent b4 eating. Deadly amanita species could b mistaken for younger edibles even the puffball. Bring on the hens!
Did a good search in one of my best hen woods & didn't see any sigh of them. Couldn't believe it. All kinds of other stuff , no hens. NE Ohio.I like shrimp of the woods, some guys call them eggs. easiest way to find out is to slice them open, amanita "eggs" are typically ovoidal and not constant inside like giant puffballs, rather you can see i guess what i would call the grain of the mushroom form different shapes, and for amanitas like amanita muscaria var. guessowii you should to make out color on the inside where as puffballs are pure white (when edible) with no distinct grain in the mushroom. first 2 pics are amanita where you can see the structure of a typical mushroom and the 3rd picture is the inside of a puffball.
