Well fellas living vicariously through y’all….. waited all year for this 2 week window and I turn up testing + this afternoon. Keep the posts coming and best of luck to all of you!
If you feel up to it, I'd still go out. Key is you need feel ok. I had it last fall - was down for 2.5 days then felt ok. Lost smell and taste for a week or two, but bounced back - felt the best when I was outside. I had to quarantine, but if it was the RUT I would have quarantined in a tree stand instead of my basement! The deer may ask that you wear a mask.

Hope you do as well or better than I did with it. Get well, so you can get in the woods....

Saw 15 total, 8 bucks and 7 does. My snafu aside, its one of the better hunts I've ever had on the farm in regards to rut activity. Got in clean(ish), stayed warm enough, and got out clean. It's a good year if I get to full draw on one good buck and I did it twice in one hunt. I already know the lesson I learned today and I have a plan for reducing one of the variables that hurt me today. Missing one clean beats never seeing one. 👍

Alright guys. This is going to be a long write up. Got in with a buddy of mine this morning who is in the process of moving up here to ohio. He wanted to observe and come hang out for the day, so that’s what we did in the big woods. Got in perfectly on my permission at around 625-630. About thirty or forty minutes go by, we get situated and sat down in the blind overlooking this big bench and holler down below, it sounds like a damn train coming through the woods. Grabbed binos and starting glassing, 12/13 does all funnel off this hillside. They work down into the holler and start browsing on acorns… we were entertained for about five minutes and out of no where I here an extremely loud grunt and wheeze. Then those big heavy, hoof dragging sounds start coming from the same place those does came from. I told my buddy, this is him… I grabbed the grunt call and started working him. In the process I unzipped the blind and hopped out….I knew he was going to come up the bench behind us, which is all fallen brush and timber. I have three more grunts and acted like I was making a scrape on the bench. HES COMING. I had this buck, which I was thinking was Oak, on a string. All I could see was a huge body at this point, walking super slow and grunting about every forty feet. I’m now outside the blind sitting in the deadfall waiting patiently! It seems like an eternity went by and I was scanning all of the holler and bench to try to get eyes back on him.. it was only five minutes or so and all of a sudden I hear a grunt directly behind me from about forty yards…. I slowly turn around and boom! There he stands, completely broadside, 45 yards, DIRECTLY DOWN WIND! He was in an area with the briar bushes so thick I had no chance at drawing and taking a shot.I completely missed him when he walked up the bench some how. He then starts working to the south away from us, grunting and coughing and somehow does not wind us and slowly walks away… about a minute later my buddy Dan in the blind next to me, texts me! He says big buck. I said yeah he was! He says no I’m front of the blind! So I spin back around and look at coming out of the same funnel is that split brow 10 that I have passed on four or five times this year. Grabbed my bleat call, called him in to 27 yards broadside and watched him browse, work a couple scrapes and walk right up the same way oak went….. one hell of a morning for me, and didn’t see shit all mid day or afternoon! Sorry for the book of a right up, just thought I’d share! AWESOME HUNT, back at it in the am

Well this morning after dropping kid off to school decided I was going to hunt somewhere I haven’t for a long time.

Going to make this short….

Going in late (kid). Walking to spot had a spike come down off hill and play hey let’s act stupid walk around me at ten yard stare strut up strut down yada yada .( I didn’t want him to snort was about 140 yards from spot). This goes on for well over 5 minutes finally he walks off.

Continuing on I’m about 80 yard many 90 from my spot I look and see a deer probaly about 50 maybe 55 ish from me stop and watch head comes out from tree..

Ohhhh man I’m watching and yeah it’s big. As in its fuggin big !! I didn’t count points nothing I’m watching and he starts towards me I slide off safety. That about made me nut right there.😝 Haven’t took my safety off in two years

I’m on top hill he’s closing the gap 45 slowly he starts cutting hill 40 No shot to much under brush about 37 yards his vitals disappeared due to angle of hill then I just slowly watched him dissaper… Couldn’t see him over angle of hill..

So I wait walk to where he was about 30 yards to my spot . Well I see a deer out in horizon get out binos .. As I’m trying to make that deer out directly behind me I hear something turn around
See two deer a flash of one and it’s back over hill.

Mean while the other is basket 8 comes within 20 of me and is standing looking over hill he was lower than me. Stood there for 10 minutes just grunting.. Then came in front of me and down hill a little farther .Stood and grunted.

I’m 100 percent certain that what happens was a big buck chased him off his doe and went back to her right below me.

Thing is it happened so fast when I turned around I just got a glimpse of two deer…..

I know it wasn’t the big one I seen it went past me… So now I’ll always wonder how big was the one I didn’t see…. 🧐🤷🏼‍♂️😡😩😂

Saw a couple dinks once I finally did sit down… Nothing after noon tho.

Tomorrow I will be in before daylight. Hope it gets one step better than it was today.

All in all was fuggin awesome. Just taking that safety off and knowing there was no ehhh should I ? It was full fuggin go time fellas.😂😂😝

I was hooked up for a brief second, however I quickly realized that he’s not what I’m after...

It was a much better evening hunt than this first half of the day where I hunted until 1:00 p.m., then broke for lunch. I was back in the tree-stand about a quarter-till five ready for this evening's hunt.

No sooner I get settled in, a little button stepped out for some leftover soybeans. He stuck around for about a half hour and eventually back into the woods headed North, towards where I hunted last week.

Half an hour later, a couple of other antlerless deer showed up pretty much at the same time. One came from the South. my left, and the other from the main deer trail just to my right, from the North. They were grazing in the field right in front of me, roughly 25-30 yards away when a nine point came marching in somewhat aggressively, grunting all the while entering the stage.

All three of them settled down rather quickly afterwards and began grazing within the field once again, right up until shortly after quitting time. I had to wait on them to leave the area before I packed up and climbed down for the day. However, while hiking back to my truck, one of those antlerless was still hanging out within the beanfield as I rounded the field finger. So, I stood along the field edge for another ten minutes or better until that deer eventually made its way well past my pickup that was parked approximately hundred yards away from where I was standing at the time. That deer eventually made it into the wooded area on the other side of the property, much further to the North.

Below is a short portion of this evenings last deer encounters. I do believe that buck is of the same buck I have encountered the past two mornings, including this morning just before legal time.

Again, he’s not the buck that I am after, and I would estimate that he’s a two in half year old, perhaps a little older, but not much. Still, he’s a good lookin buck though. I included one of the TC captures of him within the video clip at the very end of it as a better reference.

If he was any older and a bit bigger, all the arrowing action would have been captured simultaneously on all three of my cameras; the TC, my Tactacam and my cellphone that is attached to a camera mount apparatus connected to the tree right above my head. That’s what I hope to accomplish at this setup if or when I have one of the four bucks or better that I’m truly looking for shows up over the next couple of days.

If I don’t get it done by E.O.D. Friday, I’ll be back at home for the weekend for hopefully some full deer rut action. However all this turns out for me, let it be known, I'm having a blast with all these deer encounters this season. Of course, a real good antlered deer on the ground by one of my arrows would certainly top everything else, and that's what I'm trying to accomplish with my bow this year.
