I’ve been keeping an eyes out and if I see an opportunity I’m going straight for it. Waiting for a sign.

When we retire we’re going somewhere towards the south. Maybe not all the way to Florida or the gulf coast, but somewhere warmer than this Iowa climate. I’ve already made the move from my extended family, so that is not a consideration. The wife wants to go south too as she loves the sun and warmth. School systems won’t matter either as our kids will be done.
Getting the boat last year has really changed my thoughts on the future. We’ll end up on a lake or the coast with the current or bigger boat. I’ve looked into what it takes to get my captains license. My plan is to make a few extra bucks with it in retirement by taking families out for tours, water sports, fishing, or whatever the hell they want to do. Or be a part time charter captain for another private company. It will be something I will enjoy and provides the opportunity to meet new people. Just gotta slug through a few more years of the desk job…..

Kentucky works for me. You can escape people. Good deer. Great dirt biking. Where I'd like to be is a bit too secluded for the Mrs. A touch warmer than Ohio. Close enough to drive home for business. I suspect we land in TN. Western NC is beautiful too, but their taxes aren't as kind as TN. Momma wants to be within 30min of the Smokies.

We have kicked around the idea of moving or buying a farm in Kentucky to eventually move to. We love it around here but it's getting very overpopulated for me. I miss the towns I grew up in where everyone knew everyone. My family is really close and we are all within a half hour besides my uncle that lives in Georgia. The biggest thing holding us back is we both have really good jobs that we have worked for along time now and leaving our family. I'd really like to buy a farm around here but the prices are crazy for anything with decent acreage. I did fall in love with South dakota and Wyoming last year when we were there that could be a possibility later in our lives to. I'd love to move to Iowa or Kansas to chase whitetails.

@Ohiosam

Don't you have some well traveled kids? I'd be interesting to know how they landed on their choices.
My kids went where they found good jobs. That is THE reason they are in San Diego, Seattle, Chicago.

Oldest son is in San Diego and weather is fantastic but COL is stupid. Million bucks doesn’t buy much house and taxes are ridiculous. 50 miles inland the homes are much cheaper but weather gets much hotter.

Middle son is in Seattle and weather is a step down but much better than Ohio. Housing is a smidge cheaper than SD but still very high by Ohio standards, taxes are much better than California.

Both places offer a lot for young people as far as entertainment and recreation. Lots of young families. Both boys work in tech and are well compensated which allows them to live a comfortable middle class life style. Neither place is a place for middle age folks to move to to restart or older people to retire.

Daughter is in Chicago. She’s a chemical engineer at a well know food company and her husband is in advertising for a beer company. Good jobs. Weather and taxes suck. They are north of downtown in a relatively safe part of the city with lots of nightlife/entertainment but are looking to move to the suburbs that are more family friendly. Son-in-law’s sister and mother have moved to the Chicago area too.

I always wanted to retire to Iowa, South Dakota, Montana or Wisconsin. Just love the hunting and fishing opportunities that those states have. Wife is against moving anywhere because of family, friends and being close to good shopping areas….so I’m stuck in dirty jersey. At least I get to go to Ohio and upstate Pennsylvania a few times a year.
