We're in the design planning stage of our house build. We've had the septic guy out to start that plan.

A few questions for the people smarter than me. I'm sure there will be more as we go.

High quality shingles or metal? our builder suggests shingles but I'm not sure if it's his bias or not.

Suggestions for siding material?

Anything else you'd wish you knew?

Get a predrywall and a final inspection from an independent inspector. Watch the builder like a hawk . Best of luck.
YES!

We are considering covering up our shingles with metal. If it was a ranch style, we'd be covering up our vinyl with it also. Not sure how it would look on a two story house.

How is the noise when it rains on a metal roof? We were considering one but didn’t want it sounding like WW3 during a heavy downpour.

Funny because I have a small sheet of tin right outside the bedroom window for this reason. If it's raining when we go to bed I go throw it on top of the shrubs and crack the window. 👍

My buddy Josh did the blown in foam insulation in his barn. You could heat that with a match. Crazy how good of a job it does. Also has some FR rating.

The 2x6 exterior frame really does a good job for insulation and noise. We have that and if the windows are latched, you really can't hear much outside the walls. Same with the floors being TGI joist. Really helps with noise.

Spend the money on some good windows also. Not builder grade junk.

One thing make sure you don’t skimp on your base and address any wet spots or run off areas make sure a culvert is put in.
It’s a pay it now or pay more for it later.

Spend the extra coin for 2x6 walls, quality windows, and closed cell spray foam insulation. Once the house is built and the walls are closed in, you don’t want to have any regrets and you certainly won’t be tearing anything down to do it over. Buy once, cry once. The closed cell foam adds insulation obviously but also adds a tremendous amount of rigidity and strength to your exterior walls.

You mentioned that the “septic guy” had been out to the property. What kind of options were you given and what direction are you heading with it?
