Birds and yard critters

Any of ya'll feed the birds or critters around your place? We bought our house 9 years ago, and in the first week I saw my first oriole. I bought a feeder, had it up every spring for 4 years, and saw absolutely nothing. Year 5 I had given up and wasn't going to put the oriole feeder up. Of course, one lands on our freakin hummingbird feeder while I was at the table. I scrambled to get the feeder up (oranges and jelly), and he came back. We have had them ever since. Gorgeous birds. My father in law took this pic last night of one of ours.

Our son enjoys the squirrel feeder in the front. It's a horizontal jar usually filled with corn, they go in and get corn whenever they want. Above that, on the tree, I have a little platform where I can screw on an ear of corn. The tree rats are in the yard every day, sometimes only a few and sometimes as many as 7 or 8.

Yep we have treerats,chipmunks,deer, all kinds of birds, occasional fox, raccoons and a turkey every once in awhile. And find a shed once in awhile.

We have many varieties of feeders and feed the birds over the winter. Once spring comes, we stop feeding and start up with the hummingbird feeders.

We have a big house style feeder that holds about 15-20 lbs. we keep going. Try to keep it filled through winter and during the summer is the only time we get lax with it. Also put suet out for the critters.

My children and now, grandchildren have always enjoyed the bird feeder just 8' outside the kitchen window. The "Yard Deer" get a pass on being hunted and are used to educate the kids as well as a treat for me. These are all taken through the dbl glass pane window.

Yeah, my wife being a naturalist, we’ve attracted lots of critters. Owls, hummingbirds, countless bird types, deer, fox, groundhogs, opossum (some not welcome). We’ve made friends with a crow and a deer. This girl comes begging at the front window periodically.

Family always a had a feeder or two at the farm growing up in OH. Every place I was stationed we figured out what the local birds liked and put that up. Somewhere I have a pic, prior to digital cams, of hummingbirds landing on our finger - they were so thick you could just lay you finger on the perch in front of the nectar hole and they'd land on it once the other perches were taken.

One of the items on the checklist at camp, opening and closing, is "Check and Fill the feeders".

My first ever video of a pair of Orioles just a couple days ago. Same - came into a hummer feeder with a bonus female Grosbeak.

The Orioles and humming birds just showed up last week. Love watching the critters. Some are friend, some are foe, some get fed and some get lead.

She does pocket compost if that means anything

I’ve got a feeder and suet cage in the front yard. Problem is I’m terrible at keeping them fully stocked, though. I really need to buy a pellet gun… we are completely inundated with House Sparrows here.

I work the starlings over. Little bastards get wise fast, too. They seem easily persuaded by watching one of their pals get dusted. I'll shoot one and then I can't get a door or window open without them flying away for weeks.
