I’m with @jagermeister on all of this. I can promise if they move gun season earlier - guys would complain “it’s too hot and deer didn’t move”.

the only thing I don’t agree with is the genetic manipulation it might cause to the herd. A deer and it’s genetic makeup is the same at 1 as it is at 4. Assuming the breeding is relatively the same from 2-4, as for frequency - the genetics in the herd aren’t going to change. Simply the generic expression % of the buck doing the breeding is shown differently.

here is an interesting article on breeding and how it is variable depending on population and sex ratios.

all that to say, when you look at all these moving parts - regulations at the state level for blanket management is damn hard. Imo.

It’s not proposing anything. It’s just some crotchety bowhunter insinuating a certain path in the future based on his own perception of one council member’s past comments.
I’m aware that it was the fear mongering of one dude, I should have been more specific in my paraphrasing. I thought my statistic about only. 7% of those Ohio big game on public would catch more responses, outdoor life just came out with stats on majority of states from 2021 harvests.

How has doing this exact same thing in other states affected the herd or quality of bucks?
Pa... has an early muzzle loader season... It definitely has cut into the deer population... They have also in recent years instituted an early muzzle loader bear season... Since that there has been a lot of complaining that these early seasons have affected deer movement tremendously for the normal firearm seasons causing deer to go nocturnal... As for buck quality, it has gotten much better over the years, but this can be attributed to ANTLER RESTRICTIONS....

AH... ANTLER RESTRICTIONS ??? With the gene pool that Ohio has, could you imagine what would happen if Ohio had antler restrictions of let's say 4 points to a side ???
Damn... That would make things interesting...

Wasn't there a push for county by county changes a few years ago? But like most things that would actually BENEFIT the herd and the hunting experience it got shitcanned?

Well currently we have county by county and I think that has been GREAT, at least for the areas I hunt. I think having it where you can kill 2-3 deer per county is a lot better than the previous 6 per zone C, for example.

I think the area where there have been a lot of discussions is WMA-type coops (I think I got that acronym right). This is something they have in southern states, where a biologist would look over private land areas of a certain acre/sq mile amount. Then based on the browse, surveys, etc. They set harvest goals specific to that area. Most of the goals are primarily focused on density and not age structure. Nonetheless, the age structure goals can be implemented by the given land owners within the managed area.

If i remember the numbers right, the early muzzleloader harvest numbers wasnt worth it. So I doubt they'll go back to it. With the way guys are hunting now. I wouldn't be surprised to see better numbers for bucks anyways if they did institute it again. Going through my memory again, I think the weekend that the early season was has historically been a bad weekend as well.

Anyways, its still speculation that this or a baiting ban is coming. We'll see something soon

It was regional and created units that actually divided up some counties. I believe it was talked about 2015 or 2016 and ultimately shit canned

the early muzzleloader in 2012 or 13 was antlerless only and was ultimately shit canned because of the number of people that harvested bucks during it because taking 2 minutes to read regulation is difficult. I am sure there was other reasons they shit canned the early muzzle loader. Guernsey County/Salt Fork used to have an Early muzzle loader only for that area/county, that specific hunt you could kill bucks. This was in the early 2000's during what I consider the "good ole days", I never hunted it but heard stories of bucks hanging everywhere in the state park and heard it was a ball.

I think they discussed zones. It was broken down smaller than county by county. Although, some of the zones may have been larger than county, or maybe even incorporate your entire county and half of the surrounding counties. All according to the local herd if memory is correct.

So one county might have 3 zones, while another zone might include 3 counties. All they did was get together and talk. I don't remember them ever implementing anything. They did attempt to put out a social media czar. He quit showing up to answer questions on TOO. And to be honest, I don't remember why, but I suspect he was grilled pretty hard. 🤣

He stopped coming because his post had to be approved by a moderator.

Also, I told you guys this was coming after they opened the early season in the CWD counties. You all laughed at me and said it'll never happen.

I just want to be able to make good family traditions killing deer the rest of my life reguardless of what the state implaments. Hoping owning ground makes this possible.

They came out with a map of the proposed zones if I remember correctly

Like I stated earlier the herd is privatized according to harvest stats, it’ll be up to you and your neighbors. This has been said on this site numerous times “neighbors can make or break a property” . If three property owners all want their entire family to kill a doe and that’s 4 members per house hold, all hunting a combine 300 acres that’s going to put a dent in the that herd over a few years.

The map created followed geographical features. I wish they had done it. The county I live was the example used by many as to why it needed to happen. No reason for a county limit to go from 3 to 1. Needs to be a variation of change by the land, not county.

Many dislike outfitters and non residents leasing up land... Perhaps take another look at this... Outfitters are sure as hell not going to have a " Brown It's Down Mentality".... They are making a living off maintaining a healthy deer herd to retain their clients and get new ones... Then look at Non-Residents leasing land... Sgt. Fury George maybe kills one deer a year in Ohio, ( a buck) he doesn't kill does... Myself, If I hunted Ohio I would be happy harvesting one deer ( a buck ).…. I don't kill does, never shot a doe in my life.... And I have nothing against those that do.... Now... Change the current seasons and see what the Amish will do to your deer herd....

I was pro deer managment units thinking it could be managed better than throwing darts at a board and harvest numbers. But the more i think about it hunters could get screwed with tag cost.
