Potential close call this morning. Always unplug your toaster after use. We've made a practice of this for like 10 years since we heard toasters causing fires if left plugged in. This morning I toasted a slice and noticed it was taking longer and saw toast popped up but heating elements were still bright orange. Hit the eject button and watched till elements turned off. For once I left it plugged in and started doing some work in dining room and needed something from shed(found dead mice) came back in 30 minutes after walking away from kitchen. As soon as I stepped into house I smelled something getting hot and I went straight to toaster and it came back on by itself.😳
Unplugged it and it's going in trash. It's a Black and Decker model that's only 3-4 years old but we're not taking chances. Glad I was home.😬

We had this happen as well. Then we had kids grow to an age of using it themselves. They would leave it plugged in and the wife would get real upset. One day I came up with the idea of making a space for it in the cupboard. I was an idiot for thinking of such an idea and it would never work. But for the last 7-8 years it has worked out just fine. Lol. Plus it opens up counter space.

Is the outlet wired correct? If it is wired in reverse polarity that could cause an issue too. They always use toasters as the example appliance that is the most dangerous if wired in reverse polarity.

Another idea, they make those outlet plug switches...but it would be easier to miss that over unplugging it though.

I plugged toaster into another outlet and element came on immediately. It definitely was the toaster malfunctioning in this case.
