2013/2014 hunting with the hounds.

Well made it back out today to chase the coyote. Started at 630 this morning driving roads and checking for tracks . And right away we had one pinpointed. So we sent a dog in and three shooters it wasn't long before the dog opened. About two minute later out came the coyote with the dog behind him. The coyote went two sections south and made a loop and we killed him on his way back around on his second loop. We then had a pair of tracks come out of a section the guys hunted yesterday, which wasn't there yesterday. We drove around sections a kept tracking them. We took them about 5 miles before we thought we had them in a pretty definite section but we wasn't sure. So we sent two walkers thru this river section. We they got about two thirds of the ways thru one of the guys spotted the pair out in the open which was another two miles north of where we thought maybe they was. They were bedded out in the open. We got everybody in position and a guy walked out towards them and they jumped one went south a little ways and played down on a snow drift the other went into a patch of woods not far off the road so we put two dogs into the woods and a few minutes later out they all three came. The dogs ran it right into one of the guys that was posted up. Meanwhile the one to the south got up and started trotting south then west and then east and ended up going into the woods the other one came out of. So we regrouped and walked two more dogs back and put them on the track the coyote and dogs circled in the woods and out they came the chase was on and the dogs took it one mile was and a mile north and then one mile back west where they ended up putting it in a crossover pipe. Those three made numbers 26 27 28 for the year. We covered probably 50 miles today and could only find three fresh tracks so I would say us and the other groups around here are thinning them down a little

The boys got after them this weekend, but I was remodeling the house or in the snowplow. They ran five fox around but no yotes. We are getting after them again tomorrow. The fresh snow burnt up a couple of vacation days for a few of us but it will be worth it. Let you know how we do tomorrow.

IMG_20140304_153944.jpg well it took the St IHL a axe a spade a round point shovel and five guys to get number 30 today. We had tracks all over so we ran a couple sections and Ringo the dog in the picture took a hot track out of a woods heading east towards a ditch. He went across the ditch and was burning the track when he over ran it. So he turns back and straightened the track out coming back west towards the ditch. When he gets to the ditch he went south about 100 yards and disappeared. So we assume he had the coyote caught in the bottom of the ditch. I started down the ditch towards Ringo and I couldn't hear him, as I'm walking the ditch I was noticing that the old snow that had blowed the ditch shut the last month had thawed out underneath of the snow when we got the rain during the last warm spell. Which basically made the ditch hollow underneath of three feet of ice. Some spots were callapsed and at one of these spots was Ringo's tracks and a set of coyote tracks. And by this time I can hear Ringo under the 5 feet of ice and snow, along with the coyote yipping at Ringo. So after 2 hours of digging and cutting the thru the ice we got the coyote to come out and Ringo was on his ass as it went down the bank when the 223 put him down. What a relief. We was worried about the ice collapsing on the dog and if it would have it would have killed it. This was a first too ever have too cut a dog out of a ice covered ditch with a chainsaw, lol. This same dog had too be cut out of a hollow log a few years back after it went in after a yote. After that ordeal today we decided too call it a day. Up to 30 for the year and number 161 in six years.

Thanks guys that dog is a second generation. We bred his mother and ended up with two damn good hounds. Him and a female which is a mother too 7 7 month old pups. If half of them turn out as good as Ringo and his sister, we should have same good dogs for a few years. And we also pulled seamen from Ringo too breed later if we want . There isn't any money that could buy that dog, he has been a damn good one.

Damn. that's a good ending that could of went south quickly...... Glad Ringo is okay and the yote's not......

A few us are playing hookie tomorrow, and a few retired guys are getting the dogs out again tomorrow. The snow is about gone in the fields around here. Its gonna be tough getting one found in the morning. We have thinned them out in our area again. Pickings are getting slim especially without snow. But we will do our damnedest to kill a few more for we call the season over. Let you know tomorrow on what transpires.

No luck today. It might have been the last hunt of the year unless we get more snow. Which I truly hope we don't. I'm ready to get the boat in the water and seeds in the garden.

Well today may have been our groups last outing. We took advantage of the snow and got after them. A couple of retired guys had some found yesterday. So we set out for them. The wind was howling this morning but we did find a pair of good tracks. They lead us to a good river section that is kinda a honey hole. So we was getting ready to cut the dogs lose we a buddy spotted the one coyote . So we get out and put the dog on the track. A couple guys posted up seen a pair come out and those wasnt the ones the dog was on so we waited and a third come out and still no Ringo but I could tell he was making a swing back around the river. Sure enough he was on a fourth coyote. He took it one section to the east and bayed it up in a ditch. We killed it and went after the other three. To make a long story short we killed all four. And all but 1 was females. That should knock out about 15 coyotes for next year. And BTW they are still breeding the way the females looked. So those four put us at 34 for the year. We had a great time today.
