As some of you know, I was getting a bit upset with my backyard hunting…so I made a last minute choice to go hunt another farm. Jumped in the truck and was getting out of the truck with plenty of time to make it to a blind. About 150 yards from the blind I see orange in my blind, about this time my phone goes off. It's my buddy in the blind with his kid. No big deal, I told him to hunt it any time he wanted, just to let me know so I don't waste a trip…anyways. He also tells me that deer have been coming out of the trail I had just passed all weekend. So I tucked myself into a wood pile and waited. I didn't have to wait long and along came a Button. And boy do I like me some Buttons, but this dude had some buttons! He would've been pushing that 3" mark so he got the pass.
He had a small fawn doe with him, not sure the little bit of meat from her would've been worth the $24 tag. They fed out in the field in front of me for a little while and I heard that crack we all know well! Heart started pounding as I dreamed about a big buck walking out… Nope a few more small doe. They came out of the woods a bit in a hurry though and I told myself I needed to wait as my trigger finger had already slid the safety off. They stood in front of me at less than 10 yards, broadside.
Then I hear more movement behind me. I don't even turn to look as I'm afraid of getting busted, or that fart that I've been holding creeping out…(was getting very uncomfortable) It ended up being a couple of doe, guessing the moms of the young ones in front of me. As I was not in "need" of food and they both looked to have kept their fawns alive this far, I opted to let them go.
Not that they were going anywhere anyways, but I was also thinking about this giant doe I'd tried to get for 3 years. Even though she was rarely seen in groups or in daylight. They kinda milled around right in front of me feeding away on the edge of a cut bean and corn corner. A few more deer started to show up and I was up to 9 deer in front of me. All of a sudden they all went on alert and starred to my right about 55-60 yards. I couldn't hear anything over my heart pounding… Light was fading fast and something needed to happen so I started sizing up the doe in front of me. While this aloud my heart to slow down a little bit and distract me, the light was fading and I needed to check the time. It was exactly 5:00.
"Ok, dumbass, you have plenty of time for something to happen. Calm your stupid ass down and don't shoot one of these deer." Then this friggen "Horse Doe" steps out… I swing the cross bow over and set the power on 7 to get a look at her through the scope. Next thing I know, I'm squeezing the trigger…. After I lower the crossbow I realize I just fucked up. 55-60 yard shot with a damn crossbow?! WTF are you thinking?! I heard the bolt hit her and was preparing myself for a long night.
All the deer kinda followed her into the woods so I couldn't hear a crash or anything. I was really down on myself at this point. Then my buddy text me "Nice buck man, I seen him go down" "We can get your truck almost right to him, how many points was it?" I responded…"ummm, I just shot a doe" Then I really start getting pissed at myself thinking I might of shot a buck (stupid mind playing games on myself). My feet and fingers are frozen so I walk to the truck and wait for these guys to come around. I wait for them and cure myself over and over until they show up. He gets out of his car and says thats a huge buck! I say a few words I probably should not have in front of a kid… Then I ask him if he seen antlers, he said no just a big ass body. I told him it was a doe and he didn't believe me. Then I told him he was going to help me get it in the truck so time will tell.
Bolt hit its mark, complete pass through double lung hit. I would not recommend anyone taking a shot this far. I'm not sure if it was the 7x scope that threw off my judgement or what. But it all just sort of happened. She only made it about 30 yards.
BTW, the wide 10 was killed on Sat by a kid across the road. Congrats to him! I have pictures, but they all have him in them and I'm not going to put someone ele's kids on the internet.
