FWIW Used this method. Just what I used there are other equal methods, prolly some better but just using this playbook.
Breaking the new Savage Arms Axis II XP in 40p legend.
So the first 5 into the pond/cleaned after each per Larry above/ and adjusted to be maybe on paper @ 100yds. Went to the pasture and got a good 100yd setup to see how the 5 x 5 shot groups, cleaning between each group, would do.
All were in this setup,, not a rock solid bench but stable enough for what I wanted to do with the time I had. All shots at 100yd. There was a stiff 10-15 mph crosswind for at least half the 100yd range. I looked for a more calm area but nothing, away from deer, safe backstop, etc.
Winchester package of says 1.8" high at 100yd is dead on at 150yd, so toyed with that at first. Powerpoint 215gr.
Only one of the first 5 @100 was on the cardboard below the target, figured from there, clicks Up and Left. Rounds
11-15
Adjusted up.
16-20
21-25
Since I needed to run more 5 shot groups I adjusted up to see if I liked how it felt. Bushnell that came on it has the
"Ballistics Drop Compensation (BDC)
Includes cross hairs with hashmarks or points referencing a bullets trajectory at specific distances."
most of my shots will be 100yds or less..
26-30
Started to notice two things barrel was back to warm between groups but was def warm/hot by 3rd of 4th shot. First 2 shots after cleaning were always the best. Prolly me getting a bit of a pull later in the group, I noticed a bit downward pressure on the trigger to get the Savage trigger safety, "AccuRelease" that sent some fliers high. Usually on the 4th or 5th shot, prolly ~30 second splits.
31-35
36-40 second target first one was getting soft.
Didn't like the 2" at 100yd figured I'd adjust for zero for 100yd and shoot same hold, see where the 150yd shots group on the BDC for a 150 hold and thats that.
41-45
Decided thats good enough. With my somewhat questionable bench, sholder getting weary and the winds I'm satisfied with the setup outa the box. It definitely does look better with that gold ring
, next year for me.
Looking forward to deer gun season with the kids again in a few weeks. We'll see how it does downrange on deer.
