Terminal energy. Rifle bullets are small diameter. Most 30. Caliber are .308 in diameter. Like 30-06 and 300 Winchester magnum. Then look at the .25 calibers like the 25-06. That's a pin hole practically. Rifle bullets are ment to dump there energy once they enter the animal. Like personal defense pistol rounds do on people.

So my "complaint" here is that I had a pass thru shot with the same size hole on both sides. 40 caliber hole on both entrance and exit.

That's the problem. That round has more than 2000 pounds of energy and all its doing is making a hole. Now if it went through one side then expanded enough to dump a ton of energy with almost no exit you wouldn't need a blood trail.

Dave... You said it earlier.... " Bullet Change "... Perhaps do some research on the construction of the bullet you were using... Pass throughs are great but the bullet should mushroom inside to destroy organs thus causing a quick death...

Yeah, quit wasting time and buy a 450.

Giles, I had the same problem with my 350 on the first deer I shot. The only hunting ammo I could get when I bought the gun was Remington solid coppers. Small hole in and out deer went 80-90 yards in the snow with no blood. The following year ammo was available and I bought several brands to try out. Hornady custom FTX grouped the best out of all of them. I have shot 2 mature does since and they didn’t go 20😎. Large exit wounds and no need for a blood trail.

but I did buy a 450 which I may use during the 2day season
I did zero the 450 yesterday and did pretty good , the picture is my last 3 shots

You sticking with the STX for the .450?

Yes at least that is what I shot yesterday
I am using a Luopold freedom scope and on the scope tower it states 250 grain bullet at 2200FPS
And that is what the Hornady is. The idea behind the scope is once it is zeroed at 100 yards you just crank the turret for longer shots. I did not try anything longer than 100 yards yesterday but I will the next time I shoot it

I think that sabot is the same they used in the SST rounds for shotguns and MLers. I need to look into it a little before making any switches. If it is, I'm not interested because they have the same issues. People often put blame on the load with the ML, but I've seen the same with shotguns.

BTW, I know I can just change shot placement to shoot like I'm shooting a gun. I like my kids to be able to not think about it and shoot deer like they have a bow. So pinpoint accirance is not as important to me as the blood trail.

The STX is not the same bullet as the SST, the Shockwave is. The STX has a softer tip and thinner jacket. Which, IMO, would solve the problem of no expansion.

These are my opinions made from reading on different boards. I did not reach out to hornaday themselves. If someone wanted to, I would suggest that. I personally will be going with Barnes. Because they work for me.

I am happy with accuracy and power. I just think there is room for improvement. Improvement i could make. Like me shooting a vertical bow, sure i can do it, but I'm better with a crossbow. Sure this gun works as is, but I can make it better with a bullet change.
My brain is working a little more clear right now. That was a bad example. Shooting a deer with a field point vs broadhead. I would gladly sacrifice a little accuracy for a better wound channel.
