Tis the season for planning. Oldest 2 are still on track for beef feeders, and Wyatt landed on Basic Gun Safety after debating rabbits. Would like to see him take chickens, but he is not a fan at all. He got a Red Ryder bb gun for Christmas, so it works, as he always said he didn't want to take an actual project after cloverbuds
.
Calfs are coming from a friend's farm, same pastures & herd we get our freezer beef. They have 21 pregnant, 75% natural/25% AI and are due to start dropping anytime. Spoke with him yesterday and it was great to hear they'll keep em on mommas until Apr./May. Now I just need to convince him to halter break lol.
Still have a lot of equipment/supplies to acquire but the biggest 2 are home. 16' stock trailer and 40' round pen (inside trailer). Went with Cashman's Std. horse design which is heavier duty, square corners (animal can't wedge between panels), and Rodeo latches (can't hang up halters/leads/ropes). That place is worth the drive to Delaware, OH!.
Last big decision will be do we bring em home after fair or sell in back 2 farm auction. Going to wait and see if we get steers or heifers, and ultimately how they look once growing, and if I decide I want to try and fence in some pasture. They will be the start of our small family herd. I'm leaning towards B2F auction so boys can get the higher $ this year to reinvest into next, and give me some breathing room on pasture work lol.
