4H Projects

Down to the last 5wks, both animals and boys are progressing nicely. They've settled into a strict schedule of feeding/tieing/rinsing/washing/blowing/brushing/walking 6 of 7days each week.

There's a whole lotta action happening in the 1st pic from last night lol.

2.5wks out, Wyatt's first judging ("Skill-A-Thon") as a true 4-H'r is tonight. I'm proud of him and the effort he put into learning/listening for this project, but he rushed the board lol. We had some good times slinging BBs for what felt like forever in the heat most days, but he really progressed with gun handling and using the safety.

The older 2 and I did a deep pen clean yesterday and got switched over to shavings, from straw. The fellas are enjoying the softer and cooler setup and I didnt realize how much I missed the smell of pine in the barn lol.

Awesome stuff, brother! Those project become a family effort and it makes for some great memories.

We had judging here last night and I served as a judge for Beginner and Intermediate Fishing, and Gun Safety. I enjoyed getting to talk to the kids about their projects and look forward to doing it again. While I was doing that, Kaydence was nailing her cooking project. She got a Superior and gets to go to state. Kenna even presented a Cloverbud project and brought home a ribbon for her efforts. We've had Kaydence's chickens for a week and had to tag her goats in this weekend, so we're in the thick of it right now!

Way to go girls! What did K make for the cooking project this year? How the goats doing with walking and setting up?
Her project book had 7 or 8 recipes. She made a casserole for one with chicken, noodles, and a few other items that was actually pretty good (we're not casserole people). I don't recall much other than that since they tend to do their projects after church on Sunday when I'm outside working.

The goats are stubborn goats, but they could be worse. She needs to gain some confidence and establish her dominance with them, but has two more months to set the tone. They're fine with her if she's got tension on the halter, but if she relaxes and gives them slack, they want to make a break for it. They don't do that with the big, mean, bearded billy goat that walked them last night 😂 She was at 4H camp all last week and basketball camp this week, so I've been laying down the law and they do fine for me.

He was rewarded for his hard work and knowledge. His post judging conversation was hilarious. He got a 32/34, dinged for lack of eye contact and voice level lol. He was pissed, said dad, you never told me about any of that😆. After a quick debrief/reminders of the daily "turn around and look at me when you talk" times, he explained the judge turned his board around so he couldn't see it and had him run thru the "Matters" he listed. He said dad, I nailed it, b/c I did it. Any questions you didn't know....nope, I nailed it lol.
