And so it begins

I have heard and am still hearing a lot of bad things about the Berkshires. That was the main reason I went with the Wolf Fangs. I love them and they are super tough and have never had any issues with them. I am going to buy just the Wolf Fang anchor and make my own. I have a spool of 1/8" cable and bought the ferrules to make them. If any of you guys want me to make you some up just get two dozen Wolf Fang anchors and I will keep a dozen and make you a dozen 12" cable stakes. Pm me if interested.

Wasn't a problem with the Berkshire but rather the craftsmanship. They didn't smash the feral tight enough and pulled right off the berk leaving it stuck in the ground. I will smack the rest with the hammer and make sure they are a little tighter but in short order I will be getting the parts and just making them myself. Then I will have nobody but myself to blame for a failure.

My buddies had also had problems with the anchors bending. That's why they switched to the Wolf Fangs. The picture definitely shows faulty workmanship. I'm glad it didn't cost ya a trap and a yote.

I can see where there might be an issue with bending if you get something of good size pulling on them. I would agree the material could be a few gauges thicker.

I was surprised today to see that big coon actually had pulled my 11 gauge wire twist on my tree. He had stayed put though despite that.

Today's lesson....."All things are possible."

Absolutely destoyed my snare too.

Big coons are stronger then we give them credit for. I have had them dig at my anchors too so they will try just about anything to escape lol.
If you ever live trap one make sure there is nothing around the cage they can grab because if they can reach it they will pull it in with them. Coons are just plain crazy.

He got all the way down to the deer stop on my snare so he probably was exhausted and short on air to put on a run. Once noosed, in his mind he was caught.
By the time I found him at 8 am this morning, he was only 5% caught. I was impressed with his ambition.

I just ordered two dog proof traps to have some fun with around my deer feeder.

Now, I'm on You Tube looking at: How to make your own fleshing beam. WTF?

Dogproof traps are a blast. Caught one by 3 toes a couple years ago lol. Best part is when you start to walk up on them and they stand up and start growling at you like they are going to rip you apart.

Looked at a fleshing knife but man those things are expensive lol. Couldn't even think about a fleshing beam. Could always look at some and make your own or just get an old ironing board lol.

I would save your money and get some 1x's and make your own. Doesn't seem that hard to make some stretchers. Shouldn't be that hard to make your own fleshing beam either. Might look into this for next year. This year is a learning year and getting some gear. Next season will be another learning season and maybe start into the skinning and such.

I am enjoying reading this thread along with the other trapping threads. Makes a part of me want to try it. The other part of me laughs and reminds myself I don't have the time to dedicate. For now, I will live vicariously thru you guys and take mental notes. Keep up the good work all!

Nothing in the DP traps and one coon snare and one yote snare was knocked down.

Wasn't an all bad day. I did manage to score 2 bushy tails and seen 2 others. One was perched in a tree over the river so I tried to outlast him until he moved to another tree for a shot but I had things to do today so I ran out of time. The other I seen bustin butt out of the woods as I was walking back to the truck.

Here are the 2 I did get about 2min. apart.

Nice shootin!!!

Love that .22 almost as much as my single shot bolt action .22 I normally carry for my dispatch rifle. Got that scope and it is an accurate little sucker lol. My bolt action is light as can be and use open sights on it but still accurate as anything else I have. Ask Dante about it sometime lol.

I did a little drag with those squirrels. Took some zip-ties and hooked it around the back feet and then to the zipper on my coveralls and started walkin right past my 2 yote snares. Not sure it will help or not but the smell of a squirrel and blood can't hurt lmao.

Over the past couple of days I've been bored at home so I thawed out a couple turkeys I bought around Thanksgiving time for $ .59 per pound.
I butchered them and ran them through my meat grinder. I got about 30 pounds of ground turkey. My son and I also made 6 pounds of Turkey Slim Jims in my smoke house over Apple wood. Mmmm...

Back to the turkey....
I also separated the heart and gizzard and placed them into a separate bag, "labeled coyote bait", back to the freezer.
The carcasses, I boiled until the meat fell off the bones. I proceeded to separate the meat portions into zip lock bags. Those will be later used for turkey pot pies, soup, etc.
The bones I placed into bag and labeled, "coyote bait". The broth I placed into my refrigerator to separate the fat from the broth. The fat I skinned off for future hot dog making.
One pot of broth I bagged and froze for a future soup broth. The other pot I'm saving for "coyote bait".

Total turkey maximization! Just like the way Grandma used to do it....

I've been saving up my bacon grease too. Hoarder, I am, but seeking the wood-wise advantages.

It's getting cold and the coyotes should be seeking food and future mates shortly.
