And so it begins

Would you ever consider a Sunday afternoon?

Should work from time to time. Sunday is house cleaning day so I try to stay around the house during the afternoon to help get the house back in order after the long week and only doing light housework during the week. Sunday we do an entire clean-up because that's the only day of the week we are all home and can pitch in. This way we don't feel like it is just one person doing all the work and nobody else helping. Ya make the mess ya help clean the mess type thing lol.

With the rain today and time to get out I set 2 dog proof traps and a coon snare. I also set 2 yote snare so I hope to find one in the morning. Not sure how many yote are around but I don't think there are as many as we first thought a couple years ago. I did see some turkey this morning in the pasture so I don't think the yote are near by if they was out and about lol.

Only bad thing was one of my Berkshire anchors is now gone. Drove it into the ground and lightly pulled on it to set it into the ground and pulled right off the aluminum feral leaving the Berkshire in the ground. Going to get an e-mail sent out to the place I got them from and see how there service works. I will keep you all updated on what happens.

I would have thought so too but I guess I was wrong. Just glad it happened when it did and I didn't loose any critters because of it. Makes me a little gun shy and thinking if I hook-up on a good critter they will now break off and be gone with a new necklace lol.

I ordered some snares and Berkshire anchors back on 12/14/13 and was shipped on 12/17/13 and received here a few days later. I finally had time to set the snares and Berkshire anchors today 12/29/13 and had an issue. One of the Berkshire anchors is now lost do to the cable coming out of the aluminum feral. After driving the Berkshire into the ground I gave a light tug to set it and the cable pulled right out and came out of the ground leaving the Berkshire in the ground. A picture can be viewed at the following link http://www.theohiooutdoors.com/showthread.php?14773-And-so-it-begins&p=304761#post304761 post #64. As you can see I have posted this on a website where I am a mod and will keep my members updated as I go along with the service. If there are any questions feel free to contact me with the provided e-mail address. Thank you very much for your time.

Here is Mini-Me and a 20 pound male coon we snared this morning. The coon is now laying naked in the woods in between my snare sets; meanwhile his XL coat now resides in my freezer.
My first catch ever. I foresee a coyote in my near future.

Good deal buddy. Mini Me looks like he enjoyed the work too.

I too am going to use a couple coon to bait a spot for the yote snares. Should have some bait here in a little bit lol. Just not sure what to do with the skins. Have not decided if I want to spend the time to skin, flesh, and stretch them or just toss the entire thing out lol.

It took me about an hour to skin this big one but I wasn't prepared for a catch. I did a decent job skinning it out so I froze the pelt. I figure I needed the practice for when I get a yote. What are the getting for coon prices these days? I have a large family of them camping at my corn feeder. I was considering buying a couple dog proof leg holds tomorrow.

I have heard and am still hearing a lot of bad things about the Berkshires. That was the main reason I went with the Wolf Fangs. I love them and they are super tough and have never had any issues with them. I am going to buy just the Wolf Fang anchor and make my own. I have a spool of 1/8" cable and bought the ferrules to make them. If any of you guys want me to make you some up just get two dozen Wolf Fang anchors and I will keep a dozen and make you a dozen 12" cable stakes. Pm me if interested.

Snare Shop sent me some Iowa Earth Anchors with my snares. I haven't tried them yet. I've been using #11 wire tied to a tree for an anchor.

The Wolf Fangs are a lot heavier duty. The design of them makes them darn near impossible to pull. I bought the 18" cable stakes and that was a big mistake. You have to dig them up to get them back and you have to dig a good 14"-16" to pull them. I have a couple trapping buddies of mine who have switched to Wolf Fangs from Berkshires and duck bills. Here is a couple pics of them.

I order all my stuff through Blue Ridge Outdoor Supply and you can get just the anchor for like $5.95/dozen.

Badger made a tool too pull them out of the ground, the best I can explain it is it looks a lot like a conduit bender just a lot beefier.... Maybe Dale can post a picture of it.... Seems too work pretty good....

Use your shovel and wrap the chain around the handle. Pry up with the shovel. Keep doing it till it pops out.
