Dirt bike riding in SE Kentucky as a kid opened my eyes up. There were places it was a challenge to get quads and dirt bikes into. Next thing you know a 74 Pontiac Catalina is parked in the middle of nowhere guarding their patch. Must have had some secret access roads. The trails we rode in were rock littered messes and mud holes/creek crossings that could "swaller" a bike whole. Lol

I hear ya on the chains being a joke..... BUT... Have that trailer come off and cause a major crash and the police see that piece meal chain, you'll be up the creek without a paddle... Friend got a ticket once for the safety chains not being crossed....

Every state is different. Some require hook retainer clips some don't. Some require crossed chains some don't, some will write you for twisting a chain to shorten it. Some don't require chain at all and cable is legal. Repair links are legal and a valid method of joining safety chains though. The most important for a run away trailer is the pull pin cable for the trailer brakes. Some require it to be attached to something other than the hitch, some you can just slam it in the tailgate,
