My family and I purchased some additional land next to ours this past summer. The area has several entrances that trespassers can take advantage and many areas that the old barb wire has become lose and fallen down

My question is what is need to just run strips of barb wire? What type of wire cutters are needed? Best way to fix to a TPost? Etc.

Thanks for the help. I’m not doing entire fence jobs. Simply adding TPosts and thick babe wire to deter trespassing.

Pair of fence pliers and some t-posts are all you need really. If you have some wooden posts to tie off too, grab some fence staples and I suggest purchasing a post driver.

I built fence professionally for 4 years and have ran many a mile of barbed wire in my life. If I'm free, I'd be happy to come help.

If the soul purpose of the barbed wire is to keep trespassers out.... Save your time and money. If they want to trespass they will step over or go under it..

did ya'll have a auger on the back of a PTO? I have hand dug and used a auger (wooden posts not t-posts), I know why farmers had 10 kids 100 years ago, that shit ain't no joke when done by hand!

We do. Dad bought one in 1998 when we built our pole building. But when I was doing it for a day job throughout college, it was all done with a pair of man makers.

Man makers, no shit.I like that name.

Nearly all my training in the gym is to develop functional strength. I try to replicate movements that are frequent in my life. 1-2 times a week I do battle ropes and will do a double-fisted up/down motion that replicates running a set of man makers or a post driver cause I do it a lot! lmao

Brings back many memories of dad tricking us into seeing which one could dig holes the fastest. rotflmao. We learnt quickly that we still had to dig all the holes regardless of us catching on! Like Jesse, many a strand stretched and set and holes all dug by hand in our day. I agree with Rich that they’ll still trespass but hang a few cameras up high and catch them in the act is what I would do.

Thank you all! Jesse, I deff would take you up on a visit and help, Ill bring the deer and beer!

Ill pick up a pair of fence snips, Tposts, (i have a 16lb driver), Ill be tying most off to trees, can I use a hammer to tap in the fence staples? Do you just run the barb wire under tabs of TPOSTs? Anything else used to hold it to the TPOST well?

I plan to just basically cut a strip where the wire is old/down, and staple it to trees. One area is an pipeline easement that I got permission to fence off, I will be barb wiring/piling brush behind it as well.

i have been lucky for almost no trespassing to my knowledge other than one spot which is an old easement and I can tell people have just ripped a ATV down the easement past a few posted signs.

One Item I am thinking about is just sinking/building a fence on the gas line easement vs. TPOST. If I was to use fence posts, what type of fencing woudl you all use?

When you buy your t-posts, they should come with some fence ties. If not, grab a bag or two. And yes, you can just hammer the staples in.

I would contact the pipeline company and have them mark centerline so you don't risk contact with the line. If it were me, I'd use 4" wooden posts set every 10' and run 4' woven wire with a strand of barbed at the top. Outside the easement, you could go to 30' between wood posts and set t-posts at 10' and 20' in between.

Thank you Jesse - that is perfect information.

Guys - not trying to be a dick but I am smart enough to know (as you all are as well) that running a fence isnt a 100% preventative measure to trespassing- NO SHIT. However, when someone starts a thread asking about fence building suggestions, because he/she wants to build a fence, then help them with that question.

Half the threads I see someone asks, "what is your favorite mineral lick" - responses, "dont work, dont matter" "JUST SALT, not adding anything to the deer", "you know you cant prove minerals have a positive effect on a wild deer", etc.

This same type of discussion could be said for broad heads, supplemental feeding, scent control and apparently now fence building - hahaha. Now, if someone was to state "I dont think this would work, because of X,Y,Z and then state a counter proposal/solution - that would be significantly more beneficial to all involved.

Sorry - long night -rant over.

Guess I should bring some Snickers bars with me too... [emoji23]

Hit me up when you're ready to build this. I enjoyed building fence. One of the fun chores.

HAHA probably could use it, gosh dang!

I am going to try to draw up a full plan the first weekend of March, maybe we can shoot for a time this spring/summer.

Ok, I don’t think it’ll work to stop trespassers...because I was once a young lad that didn’t care much about property lines. I just crossed anyways and I know some people are still this way. That fence never slowed me down, other then to get pissed if I cut my clothes.

Is this a open field with a tree line? Is this big woods? I don’t know what your property looks like.

If you aren’t having a problem with this as of now, why are you worried? Take that time/money/energy and put it towards something more useful IMO. Maybe build some tower blinds or something. Seems like you have it posted already, call it good and move on to the next project. Seems like a waste of your hard earned money because of what someone else might do. You can’t control them, why waste your money trying?

My two cents beyond my first short comment. But I don’t know you, so I wasn’t going to tell another man how or how not to spend their time and money.

If you are going to do this, do it now. Less briars and other shit to mess with. This is fence building time, not spring or summer when it’s filled in.

Thats a good point Giles.

Also good points/questions above. Honestly, the main reason I want to put up a fence on the Pipeline is to reduce my liability. We are in SE Ohio (mostly timber) and the terrain is fairly rugged. The last thing I want is someone to go ripping down the pipeline and roll their ATV and have me become liable. Most if any trespassing to this point has been people out having fun joy riding, I just need to try to put a stop to it (i havent seen any other signs of trespassing in other locations/open trails).

I also think you can put a big buck infront of an honest man and make him a dishonest man real quick. So my goal is to reduce the temptation to trespass in the future, who knows what types of neighbors the future will bring to town and I figure I should do it now if I have the time/money.
