A buddy of mine has shot 6 deer total within the last 2 years or so down in WV with his .223 AR. I don't think he's had to track any of them more than 50 yards. I don't see any problems using a .223 on whitetails but that's just me.

Hello everyone. I posted this to get a perspective of what others thought of the caliber Mark choose for his kid. Again I'll say I think Mark and his brother are great examples of deer hunters and do a lot for our hobby and I enjoy his shows a lot every year. I only questioned about the 223 the fact that because she didn't like the recoil, she choose to use a 22 caliber bullet.. I don't think it is a good choice at all regardless of shot placement, unless you get a headshot. But like others said, most children can't do that and typically you don't shoot deer in the head anyways.. Sorry to disagree, that is just how I feel. Lot of people talk about blasting whitetails with Cor-lok(which is cheap junk in my opinion), but I haven't heard anyone mention PREMIUM ammo. Nosler, Berger, Sierra, Hornady, or Barnes to just name the 5 manufacture who make top quality HUNTING bullets or HUNTING ammunition. She kicked ass with a bow, which was AWESOME. Why let her go out and try shooting a deer with a 223. I guess you could shoot a Brown Bear with a 243 in the eye and possible kill it, but is it the smartest thing?? Probably not.... Also thinking there are a lot of states that wont allow you to use it. Ohio pistol has to be 38special min..JMTC

Likely they don't talk about it because a cheap piece of crap cor-lock bullet will more than suffice when killing any animal in North America. A deer doesn't care if it gets killed by a 50 cent bullet or a 3 dollar premium hunting bullet. A 223 is more than adequate to humanely kill a deer when shooting it in the vitals.

When I spoke of using a 221 Fireball for deer kills I only spoke of my experience in the many deer taken.
I was deer hunting even though I was doing crop permits. These are free ranging deer not penned up deer.
Sure I picked my shots because of the 221 Fireball round. Never lost a deer and never had to track a deer from where it fall as they all dropped to the round where standing at the shot.
I've done it and I don't have to make a decision if it works or not.
I lived a dream and experienced a great life event.
In a polite way I will only say if you haven't tried it don't pick your battles so harshly.
But hey as long as we can agree to disagree let's keep at it.
My last word and I'm out of this one.

There's nothing harsh about it MK, my apologies if it came out that way. That's why they make different flavors Takes more than a.223 discussion to make any waves with me. It's all good

+1 Run... My only point was that 223 isn't my choice and there are a lot better choices out there, even if the shooter is a kid... A side note, if you think shooting a deer with a 223 broadside and getting at least 1 lung if not both and then seeing the deer run 400+yards is human then we'll have to agree to disagree... no biggie. I just know I agree with most states that wont allow a 223 to hunt deer and I wont be having my kids using it either to take deer. JMTC...

.223 wouldn't be my choice either for a youngster (or adult). .243, .270 would be what I would have them hunt with. There are many "games" you can play with kids to get them over being recoil shy. Action shooting being one of them. When you have something to take away the brains focus of 'this gonna hurt' it doesn't even register the recoil.

If they are going to be shooting off a rest (which they should be)...load the damn stock up with lead. .243 is a pussy cat when it weighs 13#'s.

Hell, a 410 has more kick than any 243 load. Will a 223 do the job, sure. So will a spear if used properly.
