After the blizzard of 1979 in NY
(where I’m from) and we were pretty much snow bound indoors trying to stay warm, the first full coverage of the 59th annual NASCAR Daytona 500 was televised on ‘CBS’. I watched it the entire exciting race. It was the ending of that race that completely sealed the deal for me and I became totally hooked on the sport ever since.
I would watch every NASCAR race afterwards that was being televised. I was bigtime Dale Earnhardt Senior fan and rooted for him every time until he passed in his last race, the 2001 Daytona 500. I was crushed to say the least that day.
Never have I attended a NASCAR event before, but after Dale died, I decided that I would go to the very next Daytona race as a tribute to him.
The wife and I went the ‘2001 Daytona Pepsi 400’ and watched Dale Jr. race his ‘#8 Budweiser’ Chevy to a spectacular finish. I have the last three laps and the entire celebration on video that I took. Each time I watch it, I still find it very difficult to fight back the tears.
After that race, both the wife and I became completely hooked to the live NASCAR events. The exciting atmosphere & all the other racing fans made it worthwhile and a whole lot of fun for us. We pretty much attended every live NASCAR racing event that we could after Dale Jr’s spectacular victory at Daytona. My wife was a big Jeff Gordon fan and I obviously became a Dale Jr. fan.
As a further tribute to Dale Senior, I bought a brand new 2002 Dale Earnhardt addition Chevy SS Monte Carlo from Dale Earnhardt’s car dealership after one of the races we attended in North Carolina. Loved that car!
We attended 95% of the NASCAR racing circuit tracks over the years. Many racing museums and car owner shops. I’d usually get the VIP package at most of the top tracks, like Daytona, Talladega, Darlington, Rockingham, Charlotte, Martinsville, Indianapolis, Texas & Bristol. In fact, I was a season VIP ticket holder for Bristol Raceway for many, many years right up to 2012.
The sport of NASCAR has changed so much over those years. It’s not like what it used to be for us. My wife & I no longer attend any NASCAR events. Most of the drivers that we followed have since retired anyways.
Below are just are some photographs of perhaps thousands that I have. In a few of them you’ll get to see the 2002 Monte Carlo SS, one of my past home garages, finished it out completely with the NASCAR theme and all the racing memorabilia that I collected. I always collected NASCAR racing ball caps & racing banners from every race that we’ve attended over the years. You’ll get to see some of them in those garage photos, which some shows us having a Buckeye football party with some good friends.
During one of the early 2000s Daytona races, my wife was asked to be one of the ‘Budweiser Girls’. It was quite the experience for her to say the least. She got her 15 minutes of fame and perhaps thousands of photographs taken with hundreds of NASCAR fans that day.
I have met many drivers, car owners, entertainers, just too many to name them all. Many, many autographs and photographs of them. The one that I old most dearly is when I met the guy that got me totally hooked to the sport from the get go, and that’s Bobby Allison as you see above.
Today, I still enjoy watching NASCAR on television if I have the time to do so. A few them, I make the point to watch, like Daytona, Talladega & Bristol.
I hope that you enjoyed what I’ve shared. Thought maybe it would shed even more light about me for those that don’t know me at all.
Thanks, and have a great rest of the weekend!
