BOOM, IKS!!!

I’ll start off by saying that I have no history with this buck and just got lucky to be in the right place at the right time.

It was a quiet, damp, and cold morning. I was expecting the deer to be on their feet early to take advantage of the cold temps at the start of the rut.

Up until the doe stepped out at the end of my lane at 8:02a, I had not seen a deer. I could see through my binos she looked like she had been running and kept checking behind her.

I immediately dropped the binos and picked up my rifle to get ready for the buck that was surely on her tail.

I never imagined a buck of this caliber would be what emerged next from the wood line in Louisiana.

I settled the crosshairs on his vitals and hoped that he would stop before he hit the edge of the wood line and continued after the doe. That moment came and I squeezed a shot off. It all happened so fast I never had the chance for buck fever to set in.

I saw him hunch up after the shot and felt confident as I saw the bullet impact right behind his shoulder, but he quickly disappeared into the woods.

I waited half an hour and took off down the lane. I got to roughly where he was standing, 165 yards from the stand, and saw his belly 20 yards into the woods.

Sometimes it is better to be lucky than good!
