Got skunked this morning. This afternoon was a little better. I had a young buck come in at last light. He stunk the place up, I smelled that sucker and he is ready for the rut! He walked off to my left out of view just before I heard antlers slapping. They were only 15 yards of so from the blind, but I couldn't see them. Saw a doe walking out too.

I hunted Fayette yesterday morning. Saw two small bucks, two coyotes on the way home. I left at 9 to help Townzen track a doe he had shot at the "gar hole". No luck with that, just a long walk.
Yesterday evening, I went to the fencerow stand in hopes of catching sight of one of the big boys. I saw six bucks, not a single doe. One of the bucks was a really good 8 that I have never seen, never had a pic of. He was nice, I'm glad he was way out of range as passing him would have been painful.

Took this morning off, going back to the fencerow tonight. I love the access into that stand, never get caught, wind is almost always right too. Only problem is I know I'm not the only one hunting the area... heard a can call the other morning coming from the only thicket around, and I have a pic of a bow hunter walking by a cam. He's got the potential to really mess the gig up if he set up where I heard the can call coming from. That's Ohio hunting for ya.

Here is a bad pic of the 8 from last night. He was about 200 yards or so and I did not try to get him any closer.

I think I know who it is, and I don't like him at all. If he hears you working a turkey, he WILL be coming in to mess up your set up. Just a jerk.

I got skunked tonight. I think I may have gotten a bit of a suntan, got my flip-flops a little muddy on the way in. A little warm, but I'd rather be sweating than shivering in the stand. The last of the corn should be taken down tomorrow. That makes me happy.

I went up to Fayette this morning. The deer we want is not there, but you never know what will show up. This hunting particular deer just isn't my thing. It's stupid, really, to even try it once the rut starts IMO. If you guys could see the randomness deer exhibit as I can in the open country of Fayette, you'd just be amazed...if you'd never seen it of course. They cover miles in minutes, and I swear they don't have any idea where they are going until they are there. I sat up there this morning watching deer roam in most every direction.

I saw 21 total, several small bucks, three really nice ones. Two of which, if I were in my right mind, I would have shot. I said on the LIVE thread that one was a 150s, that may have been a little stretch, but both were well into the 140s if not 150. And I saw an 8 dogging a doe at 400 yards or so that looked a lot like the tall one I shot a couple years ago. I liked him, and may shoot him given the chance, but I don't think he is quite as tall as the last one. It had 14" G2s, and this guy looked more like 11-12, still really nice looking deer.

So tonight, Mason and I saw dogs and deer as we sat in a fencerow we know the big ones have frequented a good bit. We saw 9 total, only 4 of which were does. The best buck we saw was the 8 that humped the wide ten a couple weeks back. We didn't plan to shoot him, and didn't get an opportunity anyway. He's a decent deer and caused Mason and I to talk about changing our standards. He fortunately made the 7th grade basketball team, so his time to hunt is going to be pretty limited from here on out. So far, he still doesn't want to shoot anything but "Tines" or "Beans", and I'm ok with that. As for me, I may very well shoot something in the next few days. I'm kinda over this whole thing, I think. The deer I passed this morning were really nice. I know if I'd have shot, I'd have been bummed that I couldn't hunt a buck anymore. But my reasonable side tells me we are not likely to kill the others. Then again, I don't NEED to kill any more deer... Geesh, this is the crap that is going through my head everyday...

So anyway, I think I am going back up to the honeyhole in Fayette tomorrow. I have no idea what's there, but I saw some really nice ones this morning, and it's always fun to see so many deer even if they are a long way off. Maybe I'll get really lucky and a 200" will stop at 20 yards and I won't feel like I settled if I shoot! :)

I'll post some pics in a minute or two...

It was a great morning to be out!

Here are a couple of pics of the bucks I probably should have killed from the tree this morning. The little buck was the first deer to come in once I moved into a blind in the timber. And the selfie is just me, how I look after a morning hunt when I see 20 + deer. :)

A couple of snapshots from tonight with Mason. BTW, the basset hound has been running the deer in this area for four or five years that I know of. He crapped in our corn pile too. :)
