Chasing November Discussion Thread

I disagree that it was "just a gut" shot on a first deee. That deer was moving and I'll place blame on her husband. He should have been talking her through the shot process or made an attempt to stop it. Not like it was trotting, but definitely moving before the shot and on a first deer, I think things could have been executed much better.

I will agree with that. As my mind was set on equipment. That was a complete failure in the process.

I think the whole 40# draw thing makes for good conversation. Just because it's legal, doesn't make it "right". Someone pulling that and slinging a super light arrow "for speed" with a cheap mechanical is doing something legal, but with the worst possible application. Swap that arrow for an "adult" version with a large diameter cut on contact head, or at least a rear-deploy mechanical, and it's a different story. Boils down to education and awareness, and frankly, I think the state agencies could help with that more than they do.

This is exactly why I am bringing it up. I think it will make a great discussion. For once, I would like to know the specs on the setup and it isn't given🤣
 
I can remember going to the bow shop as a kid looking at bows and meeting a lady behind the counter working there. As we talked about my entry into bowhunting she talked about only shooting 30 lbs and killing every deer she had ever shot at, assuring me I could do the same at 11 years old. She talked about having the right broadhead on her arrow, practicing religiously and limiting herself to shots 15 yards and under. Every deer she killed, some were nice Michigan bucks, her arrow always passed completely through as she hunted from the ground.

In conversation with my dad though, he told me even though she had good success with that set-up he would not let me bowhunt until I hit 45lbs. draw weight. Believe me, we went back to the bow shop back then and he had the draw weight checked before I hunted that first year at 12 years old, 48 lbs. is what it ended up being.

40 pounds is plenty. If I didn't move to crossbow I would be shooting the lightest weight legal or only gun hunt. Even when I was shooting 55-60 pounds I never shot past 20 yards. All crossbow kills were under 20 except for one that was close to 30 yards.

I don't think I can watch these guys anymore. Winke and Jared gone are huge losses. I tried to watch the first few episodes last night while I was sharpening broadheads and it just doesn't do much for me now. Part of it is the people, part of it is the product pushing (which I know is part of it, it's a business), taking/making questionable shots and not acknowledging it...it all adds up to me not running to watch their content anymore. 🤷‍♂️

Bill's new stuff is great, especially for people who own property. Jared's solo stuff is alright, but you can count on him hunting and killing giants, so it's worth the follow. I still watch the MW stuff because I'm a deer content junky. But it's definitely not what it once was.
