cold shot

The skeeters were too bad tonight to mess with taking pics. A shame because I was locked in big time too. I made somewhat of a revelation tonight and found a new way to dial in the mental aspect of my shot sequence. It really seemed to help. Now tomorrow the trad Gods will likely go back to their normal cruel ways with me. 😂

Today’s shooting was just about average for me. In the golden hour as we say. Had a couple good ones, then some ones that weren’t so good. I think my rest is going to need replaced. Smelled a little like burning leather when I shot each time from the arrow going over it.

The good news in all of this is that I think I am starting to figure out what I have to do to shoot good and consistently with my form and draw. I think self confidence in my practice with this is a big thing. When I wasn’t confident in form the lack of performance showed.

should have unstrung my bow and came in the house after two shots like these, but I need as many reps as I can get. out of the next 18 shots, about 1 in three was a foot off the mark in every damn direction. finally figured out what I was doing wrong and got into a pretty nice groove for the last few rounds. I'm not shooting great, but I never have in nearly 40 years. I'm just so damn happy to shoot as much as I want again without feeling weak and being in serious pain afterwards. was almost dreading hunting season last year for a whole host of reasons, one of which was outright boredom with the whole affair, but the fire has returned to my belly. the killer in here is getting restless. I'm quite ready to ventilate some rib cages again.

I'm a mediocre shot at the top of my game. I have no natural ability to shoot a bow and arrow like some people do. I know that I have to shoot regularly to stay sharp and in shape. Shooting slumps are a natural part of a regular shooting regimen. I don't let it get me down when I'm shooting poorly, but try to figure out why. if I can't , then I'll just take a couple of days off. usually, it's something stupid and simple that I'm doing or not doing during my shot sequence. fatigue, both physical and mental, makes me shoot bad, too. I'm much more consistent and accurate when my muscles are well rested from the rigors of my work or just shooting too much. My head needs to be in the right place, too. I've had plenty of occasion to talk and shoot with guys that are among the best of the best traditional shooters. Guys like Ken Redding and Steve Snider here locally. They have shooting slumps, too.

the best piece of advice anyone has ever given me about shooting a bow and arrow is my friend Larry Yien. Larry is an accomplished bowhunter and two time IFAA World Champion in the Mens Longbow division. I flat out asked him when we were hunting together several years ago how he keeps his focus when shooting in competition or when he's struggling. he said, "you have to enjoy the shot". this has always resonated with me

"Enjoy the shot." I keep this in the front of my mind when I'm struggling, and it is quite soothing. I also move up close and take "feel good" shots until I'm feeling good again. ;)

I'm inconsistent in many things that require skill, but I've had exceptionally great moments with all of them.
